Advisor - Water Resources Resilience - 31494
The Environment Agency is fully committed to having an inclusive workforce that reflects the communities we serve. We value diversity, embrace it, and believe it benefits our staff, communities, and environment.
It’s an exciting time to be involved in planning England’s water resources. Our water supply faces increasing pressure due to droughts and dry weather, with recent publications like the National Framework for Water Resources guiding our efforts to ensure future water security. Your role will be crucial in supporting the delivery and implementation of this framework.
Since its initial release in March 2020, the framework has advanced planning for resilient water resources in the face of climate change, droughts, and population growth, emphasizing integrated, multi-sector planning at all levels. The 2025 update builds on these achievements to address the growing urgency of water resource challenges.
Your responsibilities will include working closely with internal and external stakeholders such as Defra, regulators, Water Companies, and sectors like energy and agriculture to support activities aligned with the framework.
You will be part of the Water Resources Resilience team within the Environment and Business Directorate, which influences policy, legislation, and delivery to improve environmental resilience and secure resources for the environment’s benefit.
Experience/Skills Required
We welcome applications from candidates with a good understanding of water resources, though this role also offers opportunities to learn for those outside the field. We are particularly interested if you have:
- Ability to manage and deliver projects and programmes
- Experience in environmental regulation and planning related to water resources, such as licensing or sustainable abstraction
- Experience reviewing statutory plans or similar documents
- Strong relationship-building skills with stakeholders
- A proven track record of achieving results
As a dispersed team, initiative and effective communication are essential. We offer development opportunities and training to support your growth.

This role is fixed-term until 31 March 2026. We promote an inclusive work environment and support flexible working arrangements, including job sharing. We also guarantee interviews for applicants with disabilities meeting the minimum criteria.
