Job Description

The Environment Agency is fully committed to having an inclusive workforce that reflects the communities we serve. We don't just talk about diversity; we seek it, embrace it, and live it, for the benefit of our staff, our communities, and our environment.

It’s an exciting time to be involved in planning England’s water resources. Our water supply is under increasing pressure due to drought and dry weather, with the driest start to a year since 1976. We have recently published our National Framework for Water Resources to ensure our future water supply is secure. In this role, you will be crucial to its success.

First released in March 2020, the framework pioneered planning for more resilient water resources amidst climate change, droughts, and population growth, alongside a new approach to environmental enhancement. The 2025 framework expands on these achievements, emphasizing integrated, multi-sector planning at national, regional, and local levels.

Your role will involve supporting activities to deliver and implement the National Framework for Water Resources. This includes working closely with internal and external stakeholders, such as Defra, regulators, Water Companies, energy, agricultural sectors, and other major water users.

The Team

You will join the Water Resources Resilience team, which leads the National Framework and collaborates across water-using sectors to improve resilience.

We are part of the Environment and Business (E&B) Directorate, which informs and delivers key government environmental objectives through evidence, expertise, engagement, and innovation. We influence policy and legislation, facilitate delivery, and build trust to secure resources for environmental initiatives.

Experience/Skills Required

We welcome applicants with a good understanding of water resources, though this role also offers learning opportunities for those outside the field. We are particularly interested if you have:

As a dispersed team, you must be able to work independently while maintaining effective communication with colleagues.

We offer development opportunities and appropriate training.

Additional Information

This is a fixed-term role until 31 March 2026.

The role includes an inclusive incident management objective in your development plan, with support to find a suitable role. Training will be provided.

The base location is flexible/hybrid, with an EA Office as the primary location. Some travel and overnight stays may be required.

Please read the Candidate / Additional Information Pack for details. For inquiries, contact WRNationalFramework@environment-agency.gov.uk.
