Human Resources Officer at University of Oxford, Department of Physics
The Department of Physics is looking to recruit a Business and Fundraising Coordinator to work on the COMPOS Outreach programme. This post is fixed term for 3 years, with the possibility of extension to 5 years, and is a remote/home working position.
This role will support the development of the Comprehensive Oxford Maths and Physics Online School (COMPOS) as we expand to accommodate 1000 students annually on this long-term, large-scale outreach programme.
Currently the programme is funded by philanthropic donations. To fully reach every deserving student in the UK, a more diverse funding model is required. Development work on a strategic business plan and 3-5 year funding model has been done this year and now we wish to recruit someone with the business and fundraising skills to bring this to fruition. COMPOS is growing and we wish to spread the word of the programme highlighting our impact and activities. The chosen candidate will also take charge of promotional and marketing activities for the programme from social media to raising awareness in traditional media outlets. Promotions will support development of fundraising strategies and relationship management to reach both those who would benefit from the programme and those who can provide funding to deliver it.
Our mission is to help STEM-talented school students to learn mathematics and physics deeply and systematically through free online tuition and mentoring. In other areas, such as sports or the arts, it is well-established that keen and talented young people need additional training to excel in their chosen field. Musicians can join youth orchestras and choirs, gymnasts can join clubs and compete in tournaments, footballers can join youth academies. COMPOS provides the same out of school enrichment to young people with a strong interest in physics and maths. The programme has grown from a pilot of about 100 students in 2021 to ten times that many in the upcoming academic year. Evaluation of the pilot programme shows COMPOS graduates achieve 170% better A Level results than similar students matched by prior attainment. We are particularly keen to support student in schools without specialist physics or maths teachers or those who come from backgrounds historically underrepresented in STEM.
In this role, you will create diverse fundraising plans that encompass individual giving, major donor cultivation, corporate partnerships, grants, and legacy giving and build relationships with existing and potential donors to encourage ongoing support and increased giving. You will plan, execute, and evaluate fundraising campaigns across various channels, setting targets, and monitoring progress. You will also have the opportunity to prepare compelling applications to secure funding from trusts, foundations, and government bodies. You will work closely with finance teams to monitor income, expenditure, and financial performance related to COMPOS activities.
In this role you will develop and implement comprehensive marketing plans to raise awareness of COMPOS’ mission, impact, and fundraising needs and ensure consistent and positive representation of COMPOS across all communications and activities. You will manage COMPOS’ online presence, including website content, social media strategy, email marketing campaigns, and potentially SEO/SEM efforts. You will also be expected to build relationships with schools, academy trusts and UK university Access and Outreach staff.
The successful applicant would need to be educated to degree level or equivalent and have experience of fundraising, marketing and business management within the third sector or higher education. You must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Strong numeracy skills and administration experience are also essential. The successful applicant must also satisfy an enhanced DBS check.
You will be required to upload a covering letter/supporting statement, CV and the details of two referees as part of your online application.
The closing date for applications is 12 noon on 25 July 2025
