Business Development Manager
Location: Leeds, England, United Kingdom
E&J Exists To Deliver Compliance, Veterinary, And Public Health Solutions To The Food Industry. We Currently Do This Through The Provision Of:
- Official Veterinarians and Meat Hygiene Inspections to undertake Official Controls in abattoirs throughout the UK, safeguarding food safety and animal welfare.
- Export and Portal Official Veterinarians, with associated professional staff to enable international trade in products of animal origin and safeguard consumer health.
- Professional staff to undertake contracts for public and private bodies, including detection / cure of zoonotic disease and vaccinations for companion animals, and compliance audits.
We have been established for over 32 years and employ nearly 1,000 staff from over 40 countries. In 2023, we were acquired by Phenna Group and since then have been focused on accelerating our growth. Our strategy revolves around maximising market share within our existing service lines and expanding into new offerings within animal / public health and food safety, whether organically or via acquisition.
The Role
We are now looking to recruit an experienced Business Development Manager to support our growth plans. Supported by the Leadership Team, the BDM will be responsible for:
- Analyzing and validating major new service line propositions. For those taken forward, creating the business case (organic or M&A route), taking the viable projects to market, and handing over to Operations.
- Developing our proposition to Local Authorities (Animal Welfare Licensing, Animal Feed Inspections, and Food Hygiene Inspections).
- Analyzing new tender opportunities, validating viable opportunities, and ensuring our bid is both compelling and submitted on time.
The Ideal Candidate Will Be
- An ambitious, commercially minded self-starter with an ability to multi-task.
- Analytical with an ability to quickly validate or discount commercial opportunities.
- Able to get a range of stakeholders onside, including potential customers, Leadership Team members, and Operational Management.
- Able to own a number of projects, understand, and articulate the support required to bring the projects to fruition.
- Driven by working toward sales targets in a Business-to-Business environment.
- Motivated by success, making a positive impact, and achieving financial and operational targets.
While experience within a public health / food business, or within a similar role within a public body, is advantageous but not essential.

Ideally, the successful candidate will be based within a commute of our Leeds office, but some home/office working flexibility can be considered. Experience within the meat or wider food industry is a significant advantage, but not mandatory.
