Business Development Manager – Technical Sales (Gas Quality & Measurement)
Staffordshire (Hybrid) | Competitive Salary
DCS Engineering is working in partnership with a global leader in gas analysis, calibration, and measurement technologies, supporting industries where the precision and integrity of gas quality is mission-critical. We're seeking a technically exceptional Business Development Manager to lead the commercial strategy for advanced analytical services and instrumentation within fast-moving and highly regulated energy markets.
This is a rare opportunity for someone with deep technical knowledge—ideally in natural gas, LNG, or chemical analysis—to step into a commercially strategic role with influence across product development, innovation, and global market expansion.
About the Role
The successful candidate will be responsible for growing a technically complex portfolio of services including:
- Calibration gases with defined uncertainties and traceability
- High-accuracy gas composition testing using gas chromatography and spectrometry
- On-site inspections and system validations for fiscal and regulatory compliance
- Proficiency testing schemes aligned to ISO 17025 and ISO 17043
You will lead a team of 4 (3 technical sales engineers and 1 marketing manager) and work closely with laboratory specialists, R&D chemists, metrology experts, and innovation teams.
With the business already established as a global technical authority, the focus of the role is to strategically open new markets, particularly in renewable gases (hydrogen, biomethane) and carbon capture, where precise gas characterisation is a cornerstone of safe deployment and regulatory adherence.
Technical & Commercial Responsibilities
- Lead technical sales activities for a portfolio of metrologically robust gas quality products and services.
- Develop and execute strategic market entry plans into highly technical domains such as sustainable gases, LNG, and power-to-gas technologies.
- Work with technical experts to develop technical white papers and present complex content at conferences, customer workshops, and webinars.
- Interpret international standards (e.g. ISO 10715, ISO 6145, ISO 17025, ISO 17043) to support clients in regulatory compliance.
- Drive proposal development, pricing strategies, and contract negotiation—translating technical requirements into commercial solutions.
- Collaborate across laboratory operations, site services, and innovation teams to ensure technical credibility of all offerings.
- Maintain a strong pipeline through detailed CRM usage and develop tailored solutions for technically advanced customers.
Candidate Profile – Technical Excellence Required
- Degree qualified (or higher) in Chemical Engineering, Analytical Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, or similar.
- Strong understanding of gas analysis techniques, such as GC, FTIR, and mass spectrometry.
- Experience working with or selling technical products or precision services in the energy, natural gas, LNG, or chemical processing sectors.
- Knowledge of gas metrology, calibration standards, or ISO compliance is highly advantageous.
- Able to engage customers in detailed technical discussions to develop solutions around measurement accuracy, traceability, or regulatory limits.
- Commercially astute, with experience in pricing, strategic partnerships, and contract negotiation.
- Comfortable working in a multi-disciplinary, global environment, communicating with technical and commercial stakeholders at all levels.
What’s on Offer?
- Opportunity to lead business growth in critical measurement and calibration sectors supporting the global energy transition.
- Hybrid working (mainly remote) with flexible travel and regular visits to the Staffordshire head office.
- Work within a technically advanced organisation backed by a global industrial network.
- High-impact role combining technical depth, strategic sales, and industry influence.
