Your world of expertise

Camborne Observatory carries out systematic upper‑air observations as one of two manual radiosonde sites in the UK.

You will launch and monitor radiosonde ascents from Camborne Observatory and automated sites around the UK, and monitor observing network performance to ensure efficient and effective operations to meet customer and Met Office requirements. You will support the Camborne Observatory manager in the routine running of the observatory and assist the wider Upper Air team in the delivery of operational services and trials.

Camborne observatory is a 24/7 site, so you will join a shift roster, usually working alone but with significant communications with colleagues elsewhere, including the 24/7 observatory at Lerwick.

  • Co‑ordination and launch of radiosondes to meet WMO guidelines and customer requests, including operation and monitoring of autosondes.
  • Providing first‑line support for key observing networks through the Observations Service Desk capability, undertaking initial investigation and remedial tasks and raising incidents for further work as required.
  • Monitoring the performance of operational observing systems, taking corrective action where required to ensure networks meet quality and availability levels required by customers, and providing advice and information to users of the data on the status of the networks and the details of the observing systems.
  • Routine observations of key meteorological parameters and providing meteorological insight during the implementation of trials to ensure equipment is fit for operational requirements.
  • Developing technical knowledge of observing systems in conjunction with Network Specialists within the wider UAO team, to work alongside operational meteorologists and Engineers to ensure the delivery of operational services and the timely resolution of incidents, providing advice and information to those teams when required.
  • Supporting the Station Manager in the effective running of the Observatory – including undertaking delegated tasks and the mentoring and training of new staff.
  • Working on a 24/7 roster providing services to customers as part of a small team.

Our work is life‑changing, often life‑saving and always life‑enhancing.
