At University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, we are one of the largest and most diverse NHS Trusts. Our Clinical Coding team is expanding, and we are looking for a highly motivated, experienced, and forward-thinking Clinical Coding Audit Manager to drive coding quality and data integrity across the Trust. This is a key leadership role within the Clinical Coding team responsible for managing and delivering the Trust's Internal Clinical Coding Audit Programme, including clinical engagement audits and audit validation using the Live Audit Tool, with management and mentoring of trainee auditors as a key part of the role. The work will influence data accuracy, support robust clinical documentation, and contribute to the Trust's performance improvement agenda. You should demonstrate strong communication, organisational and time management skills and the ability to work accurately under pressure to meet deadlines.

Main duties

The Clinical Coding Quality Assurance function ensures alignment of codified data to National Clinical Coding Standards and Local Policies. It drives improvements to audit, automation, data quality, training, and stakeholder engagement. Accurate recording and coding of clinical activity supports quality assessment of clinical services. As Clinical Coding Audit Manager, you will lead the audit of codified data across the Trust to ensure alignment with standards and policies, manage an ambitious audit programme, and evidence expert understanding of National Clinical Coding Standards and Healthcare Resource Group (HRG) allocation, maintaining Approved Clinical Coding Auditor status.

Person Specification

Training & Qualifications (Essential): NCCQ - Accredited Clinical Coder; NHS Classifications Service audit course; advanced knowledge of Anatomy & Physiology, Medical Terminology, ICD-10 and OPCS-4; first degree in a related healthcare subject or equivalent experience; postgraduate level management qualification or equivalent.

Desirable: A level or equivalent in Biology or related science; medical qualification.

Experience (Essential): at least 3 years coding multiple specialties within an NHS environment; experience with an Encoder and with clinical coding audits and audit report writing.

Communication and Relationship Skills (Essential): excellent communication and interpersonal skills across all levels; ability to explain complex coding rules; ability to deliver presentations.

Analytical and Judgement Skills (Essential): ability to interpret clinical terminology and assign codes in line with national rules; ability to identify problems and inspire others.

Skills (Essential): advanced IT skills; ability to work with complex data; support budget delivery for non-pay and support services; experience delivering cost improvement projects within own remit.

Planning and Organisation (Essential): highly self-motivated; ability to organise and implement audit programmes; experience in report writing.

Other Requirements (Essential): accuracy and attention to detail; quick learner; ability to work on any site.
