We’re the UK’s largest publisher; made up of some 2,000 people and publishing over 1,500 books each year. Our doors are open to all kinds of talent. In a constantly evolving industry, we work hard to stretch the definition of the word publisher. Here, you’ll work with a breadth of talent who all play their part to make each of our books a success. Together, we make books for everyone because a book can change anyone.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Data Architect to join our growing Technology team on a permanent basis. This role offers hybrid working from our Embassy Gardens office in London (2 days per week).

We’re on an ambitious journey to build an all-new, end-to-end enterprise data platform and embed a modern Dev/DataOps culture across Penguin Random House. We’re now looking for a Data Architect to help shape that future; someone who can align our data platform strategy with our business strategy, ensuring our work delivers genuine value and meaningful insights.

This role would be the perfect stepping stone for an ambitious and experienced Data Engineer to come on board and develop their skills and experience as an Architect.

As Data Architect, you’ll report into the Head of Data Engineering & Data Platform and apply your deep data management and architectural knowledge to design robust, scalable foundations that power data-driven decision-making. We’re looking for a technologist with a keen eye on industry trends, a passion for innovation, and a belief in the power of data to drive better and faster decisions. You’ll collaborate closely with engineering to design and build complex environments and bring expert data modelling experience to the team.

This is an exciting opportunity not only to define and architect the solution, but also to build it. A truly hands-on role with plenty of scope for growth and impact.

About the team

The Technology team provides expertise and effective solutions to Penguin Random House. We integrate flexibility and agility which supports our consistent way of working. We set ourselves up for success by holding ourselves accountable and welcoming change.

Each member of the Technology team brings skill and initiative to their role; we take personal ownership within a one team culture, working collaboratively to meet expectations from our stakeholders who trust us to deliver.

The Data Team consists of a collaborative team of data governance engineers, data visualisation experts, data modellers, data engineers and data architect.

The role

Key responsibilities:

  • Design robust and efficient data pipelines to bring various raw data sources (internal and external) into our cloud-based storage and processing platform.
  • Define and design scalable, future-ready solutions that deliver a strong and flexible data architecture across the enterprise.
  • Develop and execute a migration plan for legacy data into Snowflake, ensuring a smooth and efficient transition.
  • Apply “security by design” and “quality by design” principles to create performant, trustworthy data environments that analysts and decision makers can rely on.
  • Work with the Head of Data Engineering & Data Platform to maintain a modern data lake and ensure transformed data layers meet analytical and operational needs.
  • Ensure the architecture supports our PowerBI reporting and analytics suite.
  • Set the technical direction for the data architecture, supporting the Head of Data Engineering & Data Platform, data engineers, and our broader data strategy.
  • Partner with Product and Project Managers to translate business needs into actionable technical developments and deliver measurable outcomes.
  • Design suitable structures to support first and third-party data use, embedding data security and compliance while enabling deep analytical capability.
  • Support and embed data governance, ensuring data structures align with policies, are captured in the data catalogue, and are implemented through the architecture.
  • Work with data governance teams to integrate real-time alerting and monitoring into the platform.
  • Collaborate closely with data science and analytics teams across the business to develop solutions for their needs.
  • Design data environments that support both experimental (“Lab”) and production (“Factory”) models.
  • Build structures that enable predictive and prescriptive analytics, as well as training data for machine learning and AI models.
  • Stay ahead of industry trends, identifying how new data types, tools and practices can deliver competitive advantage for Penguin Random House.

What you’ll bring

  • Experience in architecting cloud-based data engineering/BI/data science solutions.
  • Experience designing scalable schemas to ingest various types of data including transactional, web analytics, CRM/marketing, structured and unstructured.
  • Experience of coding and tool-based solutions for ingest and storage to know when either will offer benefits.
  • Experience migrating legacy data solutions into the cloud, including refactoring and potential challenges or opportunities.
  • Technical experience of building with various types of databases, technologies and styles.
  • Experience of building data structures to support first and third party analysis under GDPR guidelines.
  • Experience of migrating legacy physical environments to cloud based platforms.
  • Capable of working with engineering to design and build complex data environments.
  • Very strong SQL skills.
  • Experience of using data monitoring, telemetry and alerting technologies, such as Sifflet.
  • Expert knowledge of data modelling and different data structures and their benefits and limitations under particular use cases.
  • Experience working in a similar environment or sector (Media or Publishing).
  • Experience architecting the movement of SAP data structures within databases.
