About The Role We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Lead R Data Science Engineer to join our client's Sustainability division, focusing on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) research and solutions. This is a fully remote position, based in the UK, requiring candidates to be eligible to work without visa restrictions. The successful candidate will serve as a technical leader within the Research Software Engineering team, primarily working on developing and maintaining sophisticated analytical tools and models that support sustainable agricultural practices. You will collaborate closely with data scientists, software engineers, and agricultural experts to translate scientific research into practical, scalable software solutions that address global challenges in IPM. Qualifications The ideal candidate will possess a strong educational background, including a Master's degree, PhD, or equivalent in informatics, life sciences, or related fields. Alternatively, candidates with a Bachelor's degree complemented by over five years of relevant industry experience will also be considered. Essential qualifications include deep expertise in R programming and package development, with a proven track record of managing dependencies and ensuring reproducibility in production environments. Strong experience with version control systems, CI/CD pipelines, and collaboration with IT teams is required. Candidates should be proficient in Windows and Linux operating systems, with hands-on experience in GIS and spatial data analysis. Additional desirable skills include familiarity with Microsoft Azure, containerization technologies such as Docker, and programming languages like Python, JavaScript, or C++. Knowledge of environmental sustainability concepts and experience within the agricultural or land management sectors, especially in IPM, will be advantageous. Responsibilities
Lead the implementation of best practices in R package design, code architecture, documentation, and dependency management to ensure high-quality and maintainable software. Establish and oversee versioning systems and CI/CD workflows to streamline development, testing, and deployment processes. Provide technical guidance and mentorship to team members, fostering a culture of excellence in coding standards and development practices. Serve as the technical authority for complex computational tasks, including spatial analytics and GIS-based product development, ensuring accuracy and efficiency. Translate scientific research findings related to Integrated Pest Management into robust, production-ready code, supporting scalable solutions for global agricultural challenges. Collaborate with engineering teams to align code development strategies, version control policies, and release schedules, ensuring seamless integration and deployment.
