The ECU (Economic Crime Unit) leads the effort to remove the financial benefits of criminals as part of the National Environmental Crime Unit (NECU). As ECU Manager you will lead a specialist team dedicated to this mission and ensure alignment with POCA obligations.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the Economic Crime Unit and provide strategic direction for financial investigations to fulfil POCA obligations.
  • Manage two Team Leaders (Asset Denial Team and Money Laundering Investigations Team) and a Senior Financial Intelligence Officer; motivate, develop, and manage performance and work delivery.
  • Collaborate with internal teams (Investigatory Teams, Intelligence & Partnerships, Legal) and external partners (Police, National Crime Agency, HMRC) to influence senior-level priorities and ensure external agencies recognise EA priorities.
  • Share lessons learned, contribute to changes in technical documentation, and advise enforcement officers nationwide.
  • Support the wider organisation in improving processes and increasing understanding of POCA legislation.
  • Lead and develop the capability of the team and individuals within it.

Team and Unit

The Economic Crime Unit comprises two teams – Asset Denial and Money Laundering Investigations – with Financial Investigators, Financial Intelligence Officers and Crime Analysts. The unit operates nationally with enforcement staff and partners to tackle serious criminality involving organised crime networks.

Experience and Skills

  • Exceptional leadership skills, ideally with experience leading a dispersed team.
  • Strong understanding of financial investigations and the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA).
  • Experience in the following areas:
    • Working in the law enforcement sector and understanding the National Intelligence Model
    • Effective communication including delivering feedback, managing performance, and building relationships with external stakeholders
    • Working under pressure and prioritising a varied workload
    • Identifying areas for improvement and leading changes to working practices
    • Developing and enhancing the capability of a team and the individuals within it
