Standard Working Hours: Monday to Thursday, 9:00 am – 5:30 pm

Location: Remote working from London or South‑East England (home‑base with occasional office visits in Kent)

About Us

We are a well‑established structural engineering consultancy with over 45 years of experience, specialising in domestic and small commercial projects. Our core expertise lies in structural defect inspections, supported by a strong portfolio of design work. With a network of 15–20 associate contractor engineers across London and the South‑East, we deliver a reliable and localised service to our clients.

The business is undergoing an exciting phase of investment and growth, with turnover rising significantly in recent months. With a solid financial foundation, no debt, and ambitious targets of achieving a minimum of £1.2 m annualised revenue, this is a pivotal stage. As our current Managing Director prepares for retirement, we are seeking a new MD to lead the business forward and continue driving our success.

Role Overview

The Managing Director will be responsible for executing the growth strategy while overseeing the operational running of the business. Working closely with the board, you will take ownership of the existing business plan, contribute your own expertise, and ensure the company’s long‑standing reputation for quality and service is upheld.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the board to refine and deliver the business plan, focusing on sustainable growth.
  • Build and maintain relationships with repeat clients and develop new customer partnerships.
  • Conduct regular check‑ins with associate contractor engineers to ensure engagement, support, and quality standards.
  • Oversee recruitment and resource management to ensure adequate engineer coverage.
  • Manage salaries, contractor pay rates, and remuneration reviews.
  • Oversee financial transactions, including invoicing, client payments, corporation tax, and related matters.
  • Provide reporting and performance updates for regular team and board meetings.
  • Lead and mediate between engineers where technical or operational challenges arise.
  • Work with the office manager to manage staff scheduling and ensure continuous coverage.
  • Maintain and update shared documents, templates, and systems to ensure efficiency and accuracy.
  • Manage relationships with key suppliers and external partners, such as accountants, IT support, and outsourced services.
  • Monitor and oversee CRM usage and client data accuracy.
  • Review and manage fee structures on a regular basis.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status – essential.
  • Proven leadership and management experience within the construction or structural design sectors.
  • Strong track record of driving business growth and delivering results.
  • Experience of team management and reporting directly to a board.
  • Confidence and decisiveness in making key operational and strategic decisions.
  • Excellent attention to detail and academic rigour, ensuring high standards of quality.
  • A proactive, solution‑driven mindset with the ability to resolve challenges effectively.
  • Experience in developing or executing business plans, with examples to be shared during the interview process.

Growth Incentives

This pivotal role offers a performance‑linked incentive scheme comprising:

  • Annual Cash Bonus – paid within 60 days of the calendar year‑end, subject to achieving agreed targets.
  • Long‑Term Incentive Plan (LTIP) – an additional annual deposit equal to your cash bonus, payable into an LTIP account. From the third year onwards, the LTIP balance becomes available to withdraw each year.
