Overview

The Environment Agency is committed to an inclusive workforce and will provide training, support and equipment for new roles. We are currently seeking 6 Environmental Crime Officers to join the National Investigations Team to investigate serious and complex environmental offending across the country. You will work with Senior Investigations Managers, the Major Investigation Room and the Illegal Waste Exports Team within the National Environmental Crime Unit. Travel nationally is required, and you may need to attend the Major Investigation Room in Birmingham monthly.

Responsibilities

  • Undertake enquiries such as interviews, surveillance operations, evidence gathering, analysing digital media devices, obtaining witness statements and helping identify lines of enquiry to build strong prosecution cases.
  • Work independently and with National and Area Enforcement colleagues on multiple investigations simultaneously.
  • Contribute to investigations into Organised Crime Groups, illegal waste exports and large-scale fraud, supporting prosecutions.
  • Respond to incidents as part of the role, with incident duties and potential additional payment; receive training and workplace adjustments as needed.

Team and Work Environment

You will be part of the Investigation Team within the Environment Agency's National Environmental Crime Unit, Regulation and Monitoring. This role involves regular national travel and occasional overnight stays for courses, training and operations.

Experience and Skills (Qualifications)

  • High attention to detail, hardworking and self-motivated with a strong investigative background.
  • Working knowledge of investigative legislation such as PACE and CPIA; excellent verbal and written communication; basic IT skills (Microsoft Word, Excel and Teams).
  • Desirable: knowledge of environmental crime and Major Incident Room operations.
  • Proven initiative, problem-solving ability and readiness to use innovative thinking.
  • Full driving licence is required.
  • Successful completion of SC and NPPV2 Vetting processes within six months of probation.

Working Arrangements and Travel

  • Full-time, flexible working (home and office) with base at the nearest Environment Agency office to your home address.
  • National travel with occasional overnight stays for courses and operations.
