Overview
Flood and Coastal Risk Management – Advisor – Natural Flood Management (NFM) role. This permanent position supports the £25 million NFM Programme through project tracking, grant management, and secretariat support, with the aim of upscaling NFM across England and mainstreaming innovative approaches into the wider FCERM investment portfolio. You will coordinate the NFM Community of Practice and respond to stakeholder inquiries. The role may involve leading specific workstreams such as environmental and hydrological monitoring, permitting, or asset management, with initiative and independence. The role is hybrid, with some travel and overnight stays. Responding to incidents is a central part of the work; you will be required to have an incident role and may receive an additional payment with full training and workplace adjustments provided to support you.
The team is a small, inclusive Natural Flood Management Team within the Strategy and Adaptation Department of the national Flood and Coastal Risk Management Directorate. We work closely with Defra and other partners to shape the future of flood resilience, set strategic direction, and drive innovation. We welcome flexible working for all roles.
Responsibilities
- Support and manage the NFM Programme through project tracking, grant management, and secretariat duties.
- Coordinate the NFM Community of Practice and respond to stakeholder inquiries.
- Lead or contribute to specific workstreams (e.g., environmental/hydrological monitoring, permitting, asset management) with initiative and independence.
- Contribute to mainstreaming innovative NFM approaches into the wider FCERM investment portfolio.
- Deliver results in a multi-disciplinary environment with coordination across teams.
- Be prepared to respond to incidents as part of an incident role, with training and potential additional payment.
Qualifications and Experience
- A relevant qualification or experience in FCERM or a related discipline is essential.
- Experience in natural flood management, including commissioning, funding, delivery, and identifying opportunities and barriers to upscaling.
- Experience in project and grant management.
- Knowledge of EA processes and governance (e.g., Scheme of Delegation and assurance).
- Ability to build and sustain stakeholder relationships across a range of delivery bodies.
- Clear, effective communication skills.
- Strong digital and data skills, including coding, Power BI, Power Automate, and effective use of tracking and filing systems.
- Experience using GIS tools and performing spatial data analysis.
