Overview

Flood and Coastal Risk Management - Advisor - Natural Flood Management (NFM). This permanent role supports delivering and scaling NFM across England, with involvement in project tracking, grant management, and secretariat support for the £25 million NFM Programme. The role may lead specific workstreams such as environmental and hydrological monitoring, permitting, or asset management, and involves coordinating the NFM Community of Practice and responding to stakeholder enquiries.

The role involves hybrid working with some travel and overnight stays. Responding to incidents is a central part of the work; you may have an incident role and be available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. Full training and workplace adjustments are available to support the incident role.

The team is a small, inclusive Natural Flood Management Team within the Strategy and Adaptation Department of the national Flood and Coastal Risk Management Directorate. The department collaborates with Defra and partners to shape the future of flood resilience, set strategic direction, and drive innovation. Flexible working is welcomed.

Responsibilities

  • Support deliver and upscale Natural Flood Management (NFM) across England, including project tracking, grant management, and secretariat tasks for the NFM Programme.
  • Help mainstream innovative approaches trialled through the programme into the wider FCERM investment portfolio.
  • Coordinate the NFM Community of Practice and respond to stakeholder enquiries.
  • Lead specific workstreams with initiative and independence (e.g., environmental and hydrological monitoring, permitting, asset management).
  • Travel as required for hybrid working arrangements and incident response.
  • Provide incident response, with potential additional payment and access to training and workplace adjustments.

Experience and qualifications

  • A relevant qualification or experience in FCRM or a related discipline is essential.
  • Experience in Natural Flood Management – commissioning, funding, delivery, and identifying opportunities and barriers to upscaling.
  • Experience in project and grant management.
  • Knowledge of EA processes and governance (e.g., Scheme of Delegation and assurance).
  • Ability to build and sustain stakeholder relationships across diverse delivery bodies.
  • Clear, effective communication and strong digital and data skills, including coding, Power BI, Power Automate, and tracking/file systems.
  • Experience using GIS tools and carrying out spatial data analysis.
