Flood and Coastal Risk Management - Advisor - Natural Flood Management - 32108

This permanent role supports delivering and upscaling Natural Flood Management (NFM) across England, contributing to project tracking, grant management, and secretariat support for the £25 million NFM Programme. The role may lead specific workstreams and coordinate the NFM Community of Practice, while responding to stakeholder enquiries. Hybrid working with some travel and overnight stays is expected. Responding to incidents is a central part of the role, with an incident role and availability to support business continuity during incidents. Training and workplace adjustments are provided to support this role.

The team is a small, inclusive Natural Flood Management Team within the Strategy and Adaptation Department of the national Flood and Coastal Risk Management Directorate. The department collaborates with Defra and partners to shape flood resilience strategy and drive innovation. Flexible working is welcomed for all roles.

Responsibilities

  • Support the £25 million NFM Programme through project tracking, grant management, and secretariat support.
  • Coordinate the NFM Community of Practice and respond to stakeholder enquiries.
  • Lead specific workstreams (e.g., environmental and hydrological monitoring, permitting, asset management) with initiative and independence.
  • Travel as required for hybrid working arrangements, including overnight stays.
  • Respond to incidents as part of a formal incident role, with training and workplace adjustments provided.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Relevant qualification or experience in FCRM or a related discipline is essential.
  • Experience in Natural Flood Management – commissioning, funding, delivery, and identifying opportunities and barriers to upscaling.
  • Project and grant management experience.
  • EA processes and governance (e.g., Scheme of Delegation and assurance).
  • Ability to build and sustain stakeholder relationships with a range of delivery bodies.
  • Clear, effective communication.
  • Strong digital and data skills, including coding, Power BI, Power Automate, and effective use of tracking and filing systems.
  • Experience using GIS tools and carrying out spatial data analysis.
