Responsibilities

  • Help mainstream innovative approaches trialled through the programme into the wider FCERM investment portfolio.
  • Coordinate the NFM Community of Practice and respond to stakeholder enquiries.
  • Lead specific workstreams (e.g., environmental and hydrological monitoring, permitting, or asset management) with initiative and independence.
  • Contribute to incident response as part of the team’s business continuity planning; incident role may attract additional payment and training/workplace adjustments will be provided.
  • Travel and overnight stays as required for hybrid working arrangements.

Team and Environment

Join a small, inclusive Natural Flood Management Team within the Strategy and Adaptation Department of the national Flood and Coastal Risk Management Directorate. The team collaborates with Defra and partners to shape flood resilience, set strategic direction, and drive innovation. Flexible working is welcome.

  • Experience in Natural Flood Management – commissioning, funding, delivery, and upscaling opportunities.
  • Project and grant management experience; familiarity with EA processes and governance (e.g., Scheme of Delegation and assurance).
  • Strong stakeholder relationship skills across delivery bodies; clear, effective communication.
  • Strong digital and data skills, including coding, Power BI, Power Automate, and effective use of tracking and filing systems.
  • GIS experience and capability in spatial data analysis.

Additional Competencies

  • Data and information management; ability to collect, analyse, and interpret complex data and present findings clearly.
  • Ability to manage a varied workload, coordinate across teams, and progress work independently.

  • We are committed to building an inclusive workforce that reflects the communities we serve and welcome candidates from all backgrounds.
  • We welcome flexible working patterns for all vacancies, including job sharing; please indicate preferred working arrangements on your application.
  • Guaranteed Interview Policy for applicants with a disability who meet the minimum criteria.
  • Environment Agency is a non-departmental public body sponsored by Defra; details on civil service status and continuity of service are provided during the application process.
