Flood and Coastal Risk Management - Advisor - Natural Flood Management - 32108

We’re on an ambitious journey to embed nature-based solutions at the heart of flood resilience. As outlined in our FCERM Strategy and Roadmap, Natural Flood Management (NFM) plays a vital role in reducing flood risk while delivering wider benefits for nature, communities, and society. This permanent role offers an exciting opportunity to help deliver and upscale NFM across England. You’ll support our £25 million NFM Programme through project tracking, grant management, and secretariat support. You’ll also help mainstream innovative approaches trialled through the programme into the wider FCERM investment portfolio.

Responsibilities

  • Lead specific workstreams within NFM (e.g., environmental and hydrological monitoring, permitting, asset management) with initiative and independence.
  • Coordinate the NFM Community of Practice and respond to stakeholder enquiries.
  • Support the delivery and upscaling of NFM across England, including project and grant management tasks.
  • Assist with incident response as part of the team, including potential incident payments and required training/workplace adjustments.
  • Provide secretariat support for the programme and integrate innovative approaches into broader FCERM investments.
  • Travel as required; hybrid working arrangement.

Team and environment

You’ll join a small, inclusive Natural Flood Management Team within the Strategy and Adaptation Department of the national Flood and Coastal Risk Management Directorate. The department collaborates with Defra and partners to shape flood resilience, set strategic direction, and drive innovation. Flexible working is welcome.

Experience and qualifications

  • Proactive individual with a track record of delivering results; able to manage a varied workload, coordinate across teams, and progress work independently.
  • Relevant qualification or experience in FCRM or a related discipline is essential. Experience in one or more of the following areas is welcomed: Natural Flood Management – commissioning, funding, delivery, and identifying opportunities/barriers to upscaling; project and grant management; EA processes and governance (e.g., Scheme of Delegation and assurance); stakeholder relationships; clear, effective communication; digital/data skills (coding, Power BI, Power Automate, tracking/file systems); GIS and spatial data analysis.
  • Commitment to building an inclusive workforce; flexible working patterns including job share; provide information on preferred working arrangements in application.
