Graduate Flood and Coastal Consultant

Binnies, an RSK Group company, is recruiting Graduate Flood and Coastal Consultants to join our industry-respected Flood, Coastal and Environment team in Redhill and Chester. We work extensively for the Environment Agency, Natural Resources Wales, water companies and local authority clients.
We undertake feasibility studies to select optimum solutions; prepare business cases to unlock funding; design cost-efficient schemes using the latest digital technologies; support local authorities in the implementation of their flood risk duties and support the preparation of flood risk and drainage policy documents and strategies.
You will have an opportunity to work on surface water, fluvial and coastal risk management projects from conception to implementation and monitoring, under the guidance of more experienced staff. These projects can include the use of both, engineering (grey) infrastructure and more green solutions (nature based solutions).
You should be driven to develop and improve your technical skills and motivated to gain a professional qualification within a few years with a Professional Organisation such as the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management.
Projects
- Analysing and interpreting flood and coastal datasets, using research methods and GIS
- Building computer models to assess flood risk, including hydrological analysis and interpretation and presentation of results
- Identifying key issues and challenges for our clients, including considering the impact of climate and social change on flood and costal issues
- Creating reports, such as flood risk assessment reports, surface water management plans, business cases and local flood risk management strategies
Responsibilities
- Analyse and interpret flood and coastal datasets, identifying key issues and challenges
- Develop products for our clients, including flood risk assessment reports, business cases and strategies under supervision
- Support the delivery of work packages within budget and work schedule to meet the Client’s requirements
- Understand project scope and identify contractual change
- Understand the customer’s basic and performance requirements
- Balance the workload of multiple projects
- Provide clear and concise deliverables appropriate for the intended audience
- Cooperate with the Project Technical Lead, Project Manager and Project Director
Attributes
- Degree qualified in a Science, Geography, Environmental Science or related subject.
- Ideally a MSc in flood or water/ environmental management
- Good grades at A-Levels in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) subjects and Geography
- Motivated to work on flood and coastal risk management and water/ maritime projects
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work under time pressure and balance multiple priorities
