Hardware Engineering Manager - Electronics

Join as a Hardware Engineering Manager – Electronics at Portal Londrinatur (Thales UK) in Glasgow. Hybrid working is available – 3 days per week at the Glasgow site, with flexible remote options.

Opportunity

Thales’ Defence & Security business delivers advanced systems to land, sea & air customers, developing cutting‑edge electronics for mission‑critical platforms. As a Hardware Engineering Manager, you will lead a team of electronics engineers through the full product life‑cycle – from concept and architecture to design, integration and verification.

Key Responsibilities

  • Define and manage the hardware development cycle, ensuring alignment with project and system requirements.
  • Customise the engineering environment, processes, tools and practices to meet project needs.
  • Allocate tasks, prioritise workload and manage day‑to‑day activity of the engineering team.
  • Participate in system architecture, interface specification, electronics design and verification planning.
  • Serve as Work Package Manager as required, providing estimates, bids and technical consultancy.
  • Give technical direction, lead fault‑finding activities, reviews and continuous improvement projects.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, software, safety and systems teams to produce optimum solutions.
  • Develop junior engineers and improve team performance through coaching and best‑practice dissemination.

Essential Qualifications & Skills

  • Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Electronics, Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • Proven experience in hardware development and engineering management.
  • Strong understanding of life‑cycle processes from requirements to validation.
  • Excellent leadership, communication and team‑management abilities.
  • Experience with schematic capture tools (Cadence, Mentor Graphics, or equivalent).
  • Experience across the product life‑cycle: bid/concept, integration, qualification and support.
  • Expertise in cost, schedule and quality delivery.
  • Experience advising, supporting and auditing multiple project resources simultaneously.
  • Ability to drive technology selection and process improvements.
  • Capability to define policies and guidelines for the business unit.

Desirable Attributes

  • Product knowledge of lasers and cameras.
  • Passion for continuous learning in electronics engineering.
  • Experience with Chorus 2.0 Design‑Develop‑Qualify lifecycle or ISO9001‑compliant systems.
  • Level 6 hardware engineering qualification (e.g., BEng (Hons) Electronics).
