Location: Hybrid, UK (with regular in-person collaboration)
A leading international organisation is seeking a visionary Head of AI Research to drive innovation and shape the future of artificial intelligence. This role focuses on responsible, inclusive, and impactful AI technologies, with a strong emphasis on ethical development and societal benefit.
This is a role for a thought leader and team builder. Someone who combines deep technical expertise with strategic insight and public purpose. You will oversee a talented research team, set a high-impact agenda, and drive real-world transformation through AI.
You will guide applied and fundamental research across deep learning, LLMs, NLP, and computer vision. The role combines hands-on technical credibility with cross-organisational influence, and offers a rare platform to shape how AI is developed, governed, and used for good.
Responsibilities
- Define and execute a forward-thinking AI research strategy
- Lead a high-performing team of AI researchers and engineers
- Drive innovation in areas like generative models, multimodal systems, and algorithmic fairness
- Translate cutting-edge research into applied tools, products, and strategies
- Build collaborations with global research labs, universities, and partners
- Champion responsible, inclusive, and high-integrity AI development
- Represent the organisation externally at industry forums, conferences, and research events
We are looking for someone who
- Has a strong track record in AI research, including high-impact publications, patents, or advanced applications at scale
- Has led AI research teams within a commercial environment, particularly where AI is being explored for its future impact on customers, business, and society
- Possesses deep technical expertise in areas such as deep learning, generative models, NLP, reinforcement learning, or multimodal AI
- Has applied AI research to real-world contexts, bringing ideas from concept to implementation
- Communicates effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders alike
- Brings expertise in research methodologies and experimental design with a commitment to rigour and reproducibility
- Holds a PhD (or equivalent experience) in a STEM subject – mathematics is a plus
- Values working collaboratively to ensure research has influence both internally and externally
