Head of Engineering

New Yesterday

We’re looking for someone to lead our engineering teams as we move forward into another exciting phase of growth at Perenna Bank, with new projects and products to deliver across the bank.

What you’ll be doing.

Reporting to the CIO, you will lead the technology roadmaps which cover systems, data, information security, technology change and day-to-day application support across first and second charge lending. You’ll have 2 direct reports initially, who themselves lead small, dedicated teams. It’s a fantastic opportunity for an impactful and effective technology leader to be at the heart of the bank’s technical estate.

Here are some of the key things you’ll do:

  • Oversee our system and functional architecture, ensuring that technical strategies, policies, standards and practices are well understood and adhered to. You’ll help to shape our roadmap and influence the adoption of new technologies where appropriate. You will set the performance and reliability targets for business-critical platforms, ensuring high availability of our services and make sure that the right processes and procedures are in place to underpin them.
  • Continue to evolve our approach to information security and data, ensuring compliance with regulatory and legal requirements and keeping Perenna at the forefront of best practices. Youwill be ultimately responsible for all elements of information security, across both the platform and within our business technology, such as laptops, cloud application security and identity management.
  • Lead and scale the engineering team, through both permanent hiring and the use of external development partners. You will set ensure the continuous development, training and progression of all the members of your team, setting strong and effective practices within your team to ensure that Perenna has the right capabilities and capacity to deliver what is needed.
  • Ensure the resilience of our technology estate, working on appropriate critical process recovery plans and policies to make sure that these are robust and well defined in collaboration with Business Resilience stakeholders.

Your skills and experience.

We’re looking for someone who shares a passion for technology leadership, and who has the drive and focus to take responsibility for a wide range of technical aspects in a heavily regulated banking environment.

Here are some of the critical skills and experiences that will be needed for this role:

  • A proven track record in a similar role, where you’ve led effective multi-disciplinary technical teams and delivered cloud-based solutions, ideally in a bank or fintech company. You’ll be able to demonstrate a strong capability in evaluating and analysing technology systems and specifications, and comfortable taking new technologies through the stages of implementation, with a mindful eye on best practices and industry standards.
  • Highly credible and effective people leadership capability, with demonstrable experience of managing and coaching technical people. Whilst you don’t need to have scaled a technology function, we are looking for someone who knows how to identify capability and resourcing needs.
  • A sound foundation to your technology skills, ideally gained through a technical degree in a related field, and supplemented with appropriate skills development through your career. However, we’re not looking for a certification collected– we’re want someone who can apply pragmatic skills and expertise and isn’t afraid to be hands‑on in a variety of technical scenarios.
  • A skilled communicator, able to distil complex technology concepts into easily understandable messages and insights for a range of non-technical stakeholders, including at Board level, and for external investors. You should be able to influence effectively at all levels and be impactful in a range of communication methods.
  • If you have experience gained from a role related to the residential mortgage market, this will be a strong advantage, but it isn’t critical. You should be comfortable operating in a regulated environment, so experience from any FCA/PRA regulated business is a significant plus.

People at Perenna are positive, energetic, and focussed. We enjoy finding pragmatic ways to do new things that change the status quo. We value transparency and collaboration, and we like to own outcomes but share successes. If these are the kind of behaviours that you value in your colleagues, you will enjoy the pace and style of work we do here.

In addition to a competitive base salary, we offer:

  • 30 days of annual leave, with Public Holidays on top.
  • 10% company contribution to your pension.
  • Fully comprehensive private healthcare cover for you, and for your family if you’d like to add them through our BUPA plan.
  • Security for life events through our Income Protection Scheme and our Life Assurance Plan, which is worth 8 times your salary.
  • We offer everyone personalised mental wellbeing support through our confidential Employee Assistance Programme whenever you need it, and access to fully trained Mental Health First Aiders across the company.
  • Commitment to your development, with access to funding, training and development opportunities to support your growth.
  • Cycle to Work and EV salary sacrifice schemes.

Our roles are hybrid. This means although we don’t expect you to be in the office every day, there are some things that are just better done together – collaborating on new processes and improvement to how we do things, informal chats and in‑person get‑togethers to learn new things or get a wider perspective on what’s going on.

Things you should know.

Our selection processes are quick, but thorough. After a short initial chat to get some extra information about you, you’ll have 2 interviews, one focussed on your skills and experience, and another looking more closely at what you value and how you’ll add to our culture.

We are a dual regulated bank, so if you’re successful, our pre‑hiring process will include ID verification, a DBS records check, adverse credit checks (not scoring) and employment history referencing before your start date is confirmed. This role is also subject to SM&CR requirements for regulatory referencing, enhanced fitness and propriety assessments and Conflict of Interest declarations.

All applicants need to be fully eligible to work in the UK without any restrictions. We can’t support Visa sponsorship.

The fantastic people we have here at Perenna come from a very wide range of backgrounds and communities, but we all share the same belief that mortgages should be better, and we all want to make that happen together. We’re passionate and proud of our unique proposition, our products and our mission. We collaborate and we support each other, and our culture is inclusive and open. Diversity of all kinds is valued and respected here, and whatever your background, your voice will be heard. That’s not just because it’s the right thing to do – we believe our diversity makes us better for our customers and helps us think big about our goals. If you need any accommodation or adjustment to participate in our selection process, please let us know, and we’ll make it happen.
