Overview

Head of Flexibility Trading – Virtual Lead Party (VLP) – Renewables. Location: UK (London / Hybrid). Salary: c. £100,000 (+ base + performance bonus).

The Role

We are looking for a Head of Flexibility Trading to develop and execute a trading strategy for aggregated EV and battery assets. This role sits at the frontier of flexibility, where demand-side assets are aggregated and traded in wholesale and balancing markets. You will lead trading and optimisation across day-ahead, intraday and balancing mechanism markets, ensuring our EV portfolio participates effectively in National Grid ESO’s Virtual Lead Party (VLP) framework and wider flexibility services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Trading & Optimisation: Execute trades and optimisation strategies for aggregated EV and battery assets in UK power markets (day-ahead, intraday, balancing mechanism).
  • Flexibility Services: Oversee participation in National Grid ESO VLP markets and DSO flexibility schemes.
  • Analytics & Forecasting: Collaborate with data science and tech teams to refine forecasting models for EV charging behaviour, demand curves, and price signals.
  • Market Intelligence: Monitor market design changes, regulatory updates, and competitor activity to shape our strategy.
  • Commercial Performance: Deliver against revenue and margin targets, linking performance directly to market outcomes.
  • Team Leadership: Mentor junior traders/analysts, building out a flexibility trading capability as the business scales.
  • 7–10+ years’ direct experience in UK/EU power trading, ideally with VLP, aggregator, or flexibility market exposure.
  • Demonstrated track record of operating in DA/ID and/or BM markets, including trade execution and risk management.
  • Deep working knowledge of BSC, P415, P375, MHHS, and settlement processes.
  • Proven ability to design and implement trading processes, systems, and risk frameworks from the ground up.
  • Strong grasp of collateral management, settlement reconciliation, and trading finance.
  • Technical literacy to work with product/engineering teams (APIs, data flows, optimisation models).
  • Experience leading a trading desk or establishing new trading capability in an aggregator or VPP.
  • Familiarity with trading vendor systems.
  • Knowledge of domestic flexibility assets (EV chargers, home batteries, heat pumps, solar PV) and their operational constraints.
  • Experience engaging directly with Elexon, ESO, and regulatory bodies.
  • Ability to operate in a startup/scale-up environment, balancing strategic build with hands-on trading.

Qualifications

  • 7–10+ years’ direct experience in UK/EU power trading, ideally with VLP, aggregator, or flexibility market exposure.
  • Proven track record in DA/ID and BM markets, risk management, and trading desk leadership.
  • Strong understanding of energy settlement and regulatory frameworks.
  • Technical aptitude to collaborate with product and engineering teams.
