The Opportunity:
My client, operating within the renewable energy sector, is seeking a Head of Health, Safety, and Environmental on a permanent basis.
This role involves acting as a trusted manager and advisor to the SLT and wider business, building respect and collaboration, leading by example, and being hands-on with all key Environmental and H&S issues.
You will have direct access to the CEO and will work closely with them regularly.
You will be responsible for the Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) compliance functions, leading all HSE activities, developing and implementing the company's HSE policy, establishing safe practices and procedures, and ensuring adherence.
Skills and Experience:
- Proven experience in implementing and driving HSE strategies across CDM, Process, and Occupational fields, with a track record of improving HSE KPIs
- Experience as a head of HSE, including strategic leadership, KPI management, and site observations at AD sites
- Essential environmental knowledge, including AD/Waste permitting; this is non-negotiable
- Effective leadership skills, team management, excellent communication, and a proactive, inspiring approach at all organizational levels
- Experience with environmental permitting, audits, and Versant with LPA application submissions
- Ability to implement integrated management systems such as PAS 99, ISO 14001, 45001, with strong knowledge of ISO auditing standards
- Regular site visits to foster relationships with site staff and promote a collaborative HSE culture
- Long-term planning to ensure environmental permitting activities meet business requirements through efficient internal processes
- Collaboration with the finance team to develop budgets and timelines for site applications
- Proactive identification of HSE issues and effective communication within the team to resolve them swiftly
- Implementation and collaboration on the Integrated ISO Management System for ongoing HSE compliance
- Assessment and improvement of overall compliance with ISO standards, with clear responsibility and accountability
- Desirable but not essential: strong quality management knowledge
