We are currently looking for a Head of Control Testing team (Cell‑based assays) to join our Control Testing Function within the Science and Research Group.
This is a full‑time opportunity, on a permanent basis. The role will be based in South Mimms, Hertfordshire, in the UK only.
Government departments and agencies are working towards implementing a minimum 60% attendance in office sites. We are implementing a flexible, hybrid way of working, with a minimum of 8 days per month on site, flexing up to 12 days a month when required.

What’s the role?
This role leads a team of analytical experts responsible for delivering the Agency’s independent control testing function for medicines such as live vaccines, tested using cell‑based assays. As part of the senior leadership group, you’ll collaborate with scientists, partners such as the WHO, EDQM and UK public health experts, ensuring testing is effectively prioritised and delivered to Agency KPIs.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage two teams of expert scientists; set priorities, manage resources, and foster a culture of excellence and collaboration.
- Develop control testing strategies with the senior management team, ensuring alignment with Agency objectives and KPIs.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory and quality standards; support training and development to strengthen analytical capability.
- Collaborate with manufacturers, national and international public health partners to support regulatory control and safe supply of medicines.
Who are we looking for?
- Leadership and people management: demonstrated ability to lead and inspire teams, manage staff in compliance with legal, regulatory and security requirements.
- Collaboration and stakeholder engagement: proven experience building productive internal and external networks, managing collaborations and communicating complex scientific information effectively.
- Quality and compliance expertise: extensive experience in ISO17025 quality systems, including method validation, uncertainty of measurement, change control, data review and audits.
- Technical and laboratory expertise: strong practical experience in Cat 2 laboratories, including cell culture, handling of viruses/bacteria, interpreting complex data sets and knowledge of vaccine manufacturing processes and relevant assays.
- Qualifications and analytical skills: PhD‑level or equivalent qualification with extensive experience in analytical techniques, statistical analysis and laboratory management software.

- Laboratory‑based roles working directly with known pathogens.
