Hydrologist - Senior/Principal (WINEP and Water Resources)
We are seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Senior or Principal Hydrologist to join our Sustainable Water Management team. This is an opportunity to lead and contribute to high-profile Water Industry Natural Environment Programme (WINEP) and Water Resources Management Plan (WRMP) projects across the UK.
WSP is undertaking a significant AMP8 programme of WINEP projects for multiple high-profile UK water companies. The projects are geographically and environmentally diverse. We are also delivering Environmental Destination projects across the UK and supporting water companies with hydrology for their WRMPs.
Our Catchment Science team works across water resources and water security, hydrology and hydraulics, water quality, hydroecology and hydrogeology, providing high-quality technical services to a range of clients in the UK and overseas, including government departments, the water industry and other sectors.
What You Will Do / Responsibilities
- Contribute to hydrological and water management elements of WINEP investigations and WRMP inputs in recent AMP cycles.
- Develop rainfall–runoff models (e.g., GR6J) and apply model calibration techniques.
- Apply wider hydrology approaches for water resources applications in England and Wales, including flow naturalisation, decomposition and reservoir mass balance modeling.
- Familiarity with demand management and water resources modeling approaches (e.g., Aquator, PyWR, MISER).
- Understand UK water resources management regulations (Water Resources Planning Guidelines, WINEP guidance such as Preventing Deterioration and Environmental Destination).
- Assess climate-change resilience, including familiarity with UKCP18 data products.
- Supervise small hydrology teams, mentor junior colleagues, with opportunities for formal People Management.
- Deliver high-quality client and regulator-facing outputs with attention to detail and quality assurance.
- Programming experience (e.g., Python and/or R) and willingness to develop these skills.
- Communicate effectively and write high-quality concise reports; work collaboratively across sectors.
Qualifications
- A water-focused MSc (e.g., hydrology & water resources, sustainable water management) and a related BSc (e.g., physical geography, earth sciences, geology, civil engineering).
- Gained or working towards chartership with a relevant professional body.
