Overview
Intelligence Research Officer required to join the National Environmental Crime Unit (NECU) within the Environment Agency. The Environment Agency aims to be an intelligence-led organisation, with the ability to manage intelligence professionally and in line with current guidance to ensure threat, risk and harm are appropriately assessed and managed. Environmental crime is a strategic priority requiring high-profile attention from the public, media, national and international stakeholders.
This role supports investigations and helps prioritise and drive interventions to remove unlawful operators from the waste regimes. You will develop and access intelligence from a range of sources to inform decision making and produce actionable intelligence for customers. The team operates within the Intelligence & Partnerships department, providing intelligence products and assessments to colleagues.
Location is flexible with a mix of home and office working; travel to Birmingham and Sheffield offices may be required on occasions. We welcome flexible working patterns including job share. Security vetting checks (SC and NPPV3) are required.

Responsibilities
- Proactively develop and access intelligence from a range of sources to inform decision making
- Provide actionable intelligence products for customers and support investigations to prioritise and drive interventions
- Assist in removing unlawful operators from the waste regimes
- Respond to incidents as part of an incident role; be available to support business continuity during an incident (may attract additional payment and full training; alternative working arrangements available)
- Gather, evaluate data from diverse sources and prepare research summaries; interrogate IT systems and databases
- Communicate findings clearly; represent the Environment Agency professionally with partners
- Work as part of a dispersed team and contribute to a culture of inclusion
Qualifications and experience
- Experience collecting and evaluating data from varied sources to produce inform and inform intelligence products
- Experience interrogating IT systems and databases; enthusiastic and curious about finding information
- Good communication skills and the ability to listen and transmit information effectively
- Ability to use standard IT packages and retrieve information accurately
- Strong teamwork skills and an inclusive approach
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and administrative activities
