The Data Development Officer role sits within one of our waste teams in the Environmental Markets & Regulation department—a national team with officers across England. Our department ensures companies manage waste responsibly by enforcing the “right waste, right place” principle. You’ll support compliance and enforcement efforts, contributing to England’s circular economy.

You will need to be comfortable working in a dispersed team. The Environment Agency uses a hybrid working approach, including office and home working. Regular travel for enforcement activities and training in York, Sheffield, Birmingham and Bristol is expected. Incident response is a key part of the role; you’ll be trained and supported to take on an incident role, which may include additional pay.

The team: EM&R is a supportive and inclusive department that encourages health, safety, wellbeing and development. We regulate areas including Packaging Waste, Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment, Batteries and International Waste Shipments to improve recycling quality and ensure safe handling of waste entering and leaving the country.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in producing intelligence products, analysing data, maintaining case systems, and collaborating with partners to support investigative and regulatory work.
  • Develop innovations to shape evidence-based decisions, drive new investigations, and enhance disruption strategies while ensuring GDPR compliance and effective communication across teams.
  • Contribute to enforcement efforts through the investigation of potential waste-related offences and supporting disruption activities.

Experience/skills Required

  • A good understanding of intelligence, how to interpret and use it appropriately.
  • An inquisitive approach to the research and development of information and intelligence.
  • Experience of using intelligence to help identify patterns and trends.
  • A confident communicator who can convey information and ideas clearly.
  • Excellent influencing skills and success in developing good relations in complex environments.
  • Great teamwork to support colleagues achieve common goals.
  • Experience of producing accurate reports; collation, analysis and interpretation of data using Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to manage multiple demands on time in a prioritised manner to achieve outcomes and deliver against plans.

A full UK Driving License is a requirement for this role.
