The Opportunity

We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Lead Bridge Engineer to join our Amey Consulting team in Manchester, Newcastle, Sheffield, with shared office space, attending when necessary, and working remotely on other days. We welcome applications from Lead Engineers across this region.

Our Structures Team is involved in designing major civil engineering and infrastructure projects across Scotland, with project values exceeding £1bn.

Amey manages long-term contracts for the Southwest and Northeast Trunk Road Networks, with durations of 8 years, extendable to 12. In addition, we have diverse projects involving roads, bridges, and transportation design across the UK.

The role

Our Lead Bridge Engineers support the Design team and work closely with Transport Scotland. They lead projects, mentor junior staff, and support client relations.

Responsibilities include:

• Leading a team to produce technically sound engineering solutions adhering to standards and client requirements
• Preparing and checking designs, calculations, and documentation
• Overseeing junior staff and taking responsibility for their actions
• Managing project budgets and costs
• Liaising with clients and suppliers
• Contributing to bids and work-winning activities
• Promoting health and safety practices

What you will bring to us:

• Experience in civil engineering, likely as a Senior Engineer or similar
• Ability to produce and check engineering designs independently
• Knowledge of health, safety, and welfare management
• Experience as a main engineering contact, e.g., CRE for Network Rail schemes
• Design and specification expertise, capable of advising and checking designs
• Proficiency with relevant software and analytical tools
• Understanding of CDM and risk management
• Management skills for leading a technical team
• Incorporated or Chartered status preferred
