400kV Onshore HVDC Converter Station Lead Commissioning Engineer - Major Offshore Wind Project - Redcar, England, United Kingdom (site based with occasional remote working) - £Excellent Daily Rate + Expenses - 6 Month Contract + Likely Extensions - ASAP Start Date (can wait for notice period if required) - Monday to Friday (occasional weekend work) - Inside IR35
We're supporting a leading offshore wind developer who are seeking an experienced 400kV Lead Commissioning Engineer to join their team and manage the commissioning and energisation of a HVDC converter station for a major offshore wind project. This is a high-profile role, central to the energisation of a critical transmission substation in the North East, with strong potential for extension beyond the initial scope.
The Role
As Lead Commissioning Engineer, you will take responsibility for the planning, execution, and management of commissioning activities across the 400kV onshore converter station. You will work closely with project teams, the contractor, and site staff to ensure safe, compliant, and efficient delivery through to energisation.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead commissioning of 400kV primary plant, protection, and control systems.
- Develop and deliver commissioning plans, test documentation, and reports.
- Act as the senior technical interface with the client during commissioning.
- Ensure full compliance with safety rules and company standards.
- Supervise commissioning teams and subcontractors.
- Attend and contribute to commissioning panel meetings.
- Manage commissioning activities through to final energisation and handover.
- Location: Redcar, England (Onshore Substation) – remote working flexibility whilst the site is quiet
- Start Date: ASAP (can wait for notice period if required)
Requirements
- TP141/BP141/SR141 Commissioning Engineer (National Grid), SSEN or SPEN (TSO) background preferable.
- HVDC experience beneficial.
- Strong understanding of HV testing, commissioning strategy, and safety rules.
- Ability to lead commissioning activities through to energisation.
- Right to work in the UK.
- In-depth knowledge of UK transmission commissioning processes.
- Excellent leadership, reporting, and stakeholder management skills.
