Location: UK Role. Hybrid Working Model. Typically, 3 days on location around the business, 2 days WFH by agreement. Main offices: Crewe, Farringdon, Sheffield, Nottingham, plus satellite project offices.
Job Purpose
The Lead Document Control Manager is responsible for overseeing the document control community, ensuring efficient, secure, and compliant management of project information across all stages.
This includes establishing and maintaining document control processes, governance and training to support project delivery and business objectives. The role ensures adherence to applicable industry standards, including ISO 19650, and drives continuous improvement in document control practices.

Key Responsibilities
Document Control Standards & Governance
- Working with Lead Information Manager, develop, implement and audit document control standards, ensuring alignment with industry standards and project requirements.
- Establish and maintain document control procedures and policies to drive consistency and compliance across all projects.
- Promote adoption and proper use of the chosen Common Data Environment (CDE) for project information and ensure compliance with Aureos standards and appropriately aligned to ISO19650 and ISO27001.
- Define and enforce document security, retention, and archiving policies in compliance with GDPR, ISO27001 and ISO19650.
- Act as the final escalation point for document control-related issues across all projects.
- Ensure seamless document handover to clients at project completion.
- Ensure that document control processes are embedded into project workflows, providing training and support where necessary.
- Monitor compliance with ISO 19650 and contractual requirements through regular health-checks/audits and reporting
- Ensure all project information is stored and managed appropriately in accordance with agreed Information Management Plan.
Team Management & Development
- Manage, mentor, and develop the document control team to ensure high performance and continuous improvement.
- Identify training needs and implement learning programmes to enhance team capability.
- Establish and maintain competency frameworks and career progression pathways for document control professionals.
- Provide functional line management for all document controllers.
- Develop an Aureos DC Resource Pool to support projects with temporary demand.
Stakeholder Collaboration & Work Winning Support
- Serve as the primary contact for document control matters, engaging with internal and external stakeholders.
Business-Wide Support
- Advocate for effective Information Management and support the roll-out of the CDE across the business.
- Promote innovation and best practices sharing and applying lessons.
- Support pursuit of ISO19650 and ISO27001 certification.
Key Qualifications & Experience
- 10 years proven experience in a senior document control role within construction or infrastructure projects.
- Experience as a Team Leader
- Expertise in managing EDMS and ensuring compliance with ISO 19650.
- Strong leadership skills with experience in training, mentoring and developing teams.
- Excellent organisational, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
- Strong understanding of information security, GDPR, and data protection regulations.
- Effective stakeholder management and communication skills.
- Willingness to travel to meet, audit and train teams face to face as required.
- Recognised qualification in Document Control/Management
- Familiarity with Rail industry document control standards and processes an advantage.
- Familiarity with platforms such as Autodesk Construction Cloud, ProjectWise, or similar tools.
- Experience in training and upskilling teams on document control.
- Collaboration: Works effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
- Communication: Provides clear updates and engages effectively at all levels.
- Adaptability: Adjusts to evolving business needs.
- Problem-Solving: Applies critical thinking to address challenges proactively.
