Job Specification: Hands-On Platform Engineering Architect (Contract, Financial Services)

About the Role

We are working on behalf of a leading Financial Services client to hire a hands-on Platform Engineering Architect on a 6-month contract (likely to extend). The role is London-based with flexible working options, but candidates must be able to attend the office when required. This position is inside IR35.

The Enterprise Engineering function is building Governance as a Service (GaaS) — an event-driven architecture in AWS designed to detect and respond to non-compliant events across both on-premise and cloud estates. This initiative is central to the client’s governance strategy, enabling codified controls, automated responses, and scalable governance across the enterprise.

We are seeking a highly technical, hands-on Platform Engineering Architect to lead design and implementation, build scalable and secure platforms, and deliver enterprise-ready solutions in collaboration with security, engineering, and business teams.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership & Architecture

  • Define and drive platform architecture, including internal developer platforms, cloud infrastructure, and automation frameworks.
  • Work closely with the Security Lead to embed security standards, policy-as-code, and compliance requirements into platform design.
  • Provide hands-on guidance on code design, TDD, pair programming, and engineering best practices.
  • Implement scalable, automated solutions using AWS, Python, Terraform, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Convert technology and governance standards into policies-as-code integrated with GaaS.
  • Lead development and deployment of event-driven architectures across cloud and on-premise systems.
  • Troubleshoot, optimize, and iterate on platform components to meet enterprise needs.
  • Collaborate with business, security, and engineering teams to translate governance objectives into practical outcomes.
  • Mentor engineers, foster best practices, and promote knowledge sharing across teams.
  • Manage, coordinate, and onboard vendor engineering resources (e.g., Nagarro, FWDView) to deliver platform objectives.

Governance & Strategy Alignment

  • Ensure all platform engineering aligns with enterprise governance, security, and compliance frameworks.
  • Advocate for automation, repeatability, and scalability in governance-related platform components.
  • Translate strategic priorities into actionable technical solutions that are secure, reliable, and maintainable.

Skills & Experience

  • Proven experience as a Platform Engineer, Architect, or Principal Engineer in enterprise environments.
  • Hands-on experience with event-driven architectures and internal developer platforms.
  • Experience integrating security, governance, and compliance requirements into engineering solutions (policy-as-code, controls automation).
  • Deep understanding of enterprise technology governance frameworks.
  • Experience leading and mentoring technical teams and coordinating third-party engineering vendors.
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills across business, security, and engineering stakeholders.
  • Duration: 6 months (likely to extend)
  • Location: London-based, flexible working (must attend office when needed)
  • IR35: Inside IR35
