Key Accountabilities
- Act as a senior HSW professional within the HSW Team and fulfil the ‘competent’ person legal requirement in the absence of the Deputy Director for Health, Safety & Wellbeing.
- Lead the design, documentation, review and continuous improvement of the HSW management systems ensuring they align to the ISO45001 and ISO45003 standards.
- Lead the development of clear, accessible policy and standards that explain people’s roles and responsibilities and the competence required to deliver legal and other duties.
- Lead on the development and continuous improvement of the risk assessment process to ensure that all significant HSW risks are identified.
- Lead on the development of HSW training and awareness materials that are easily accessible and designed to explain to the audience what they need to do to stay safe and well.
- Lead on how HSW information is shared and presented to ensure it can be easily accessed and understood.
- Provide and input into regular progress updates for STA, EDT, EA Board and other senior level governance meetings.
- Establish and maintain good relationships with internal and external partners to influence their activities and promote and enhance the EA’s goals and ambitions.
Experience and Skills Required
- A strong understanding and experience of Health, Safety & Wellbeing management in the Environment Agency.
- Experience and understanding of the Health, Safety & Wellbeing management systems including ISO45001, 45003 and 9001.
- Strong, verbal, written and analytical skills and the ability to communicate and engage with the confidence to present and influence individuals at all levels.
- Able to think strategically and respond quickly and flexibly to evolving priorities and comfortable to make decisions and set direction.
- Avoiding duplication, being efficient and working sustainably across the whole HSW team.
- It is essential for candidates to have, or be working towards the following: NEBOSH Diploma for Occupational Health and Safety Management Professionals, or equivalent.
- Chartered membership of IOSH or equivalent (or evidence of working towards).
- It is essential that the formal qualification is supported by several years’ work experience of practically applying HSW standards.

As Health, Safety and Wellbeing is a national team, the role is hybrid can be undertaken from anywhere in the country. Travel expectations are flexible and can be adjusted to suit the role and the post holder's needs. Health, Safety and Wellbeing have bi-annual face-to-face whole service meetings, often in Birmingham, Bristol or London. Interviews are expected to take place via Microsoft Teams on weeks commencing 17th November and 24th November. Please advise if you require any reasonable adjustments.
