At the Environment Agency, we aspire for inclusivity and are committed to a diverse workforce. This role offers an exciting opportunity to lead the Health, Safety and Wellbeing (HSW) Technical Team and drive our culture of safety and wellbeing across the organisation.
This position is a senior HSW professional and will act as the competent person in the absence of the Deputy Director for Health, Safety & Wellbeing.
Responsibilities
- Lead the design, documentation, and continuous improvement of the HSW management systems, ensuring they align to ISO45001 and ISO45003.
- Develop clear, accessible policy and standards that outline roles, responsibilities and competence required for legal and other duties.
- Lead the development and continuous improvement of the risk assessment process to identify all significant HSW risks.
- Lead on the development of HSW training and awareness materials that are easily accessible and explain what staff need to do to stay safe and well.
- Lead on how HSW information is shared and presented to ensure it is easily accessed and understood.
- Provide and input regular progress updates for STA, EDT, EA Board and other senior‑level governance meetings.
- Establish and maintain good relationships with internal and external partners to influence activities and promote EA’s goals.
- Report directly to the Deputy Director of Health, Safety & Wellbeing and form part of the HSW leadership team.
Qualifications and Experience
- Strong understanding and experience of HSW management in the Environment Agency.
- Experience with ISO45001, 45003 and 9001 management systems.
- Strong verbal, written and analytical skills with the ability to influence individuals at all levels.
- Ability to think strategically, respond quickly to evolving priorities and make decisions.
- Proficiency in working sustainably across the HSW team while avoiding duplication.
- NEBOSH Diploma for Occupational Health and Safety Management Professionals, or equivalent.
- Chartered membership of IOSH or equivalent (or evidence of working towards).
- Formal qualification supported by several years’ work experience of practically applying HSW standards.
- Hybrid role; travel expectations flexible.
