Network and Cybersecurity Engineer role at GE Vernova Join GE Vernova’s HVDC Centre of Excellence in Stafford, which delivers turnkey solutions for the global HVDC market. The role focuses on defining and securing substation LAN networks for HVDC Substation Automation Systems across large, multi‑stakeholder projects. Responsibilities
Knowledge of networks and communication architectures of the HVDC Control System from concept to commissioning, based on IEC 62443‑3‑3. Act as the primary point of contact for cybersecurity and networking matters within projects, evaluating third‑party supplier solutions that interface to the control system. Support tendering teams during the bidding process for cybersecurity and networking requirements, applying standards such as EU NIS, NERC, BDES. Ensure Secure Deployment Guides for the HVDC Control System and third‑party interfaces are followed. Ensure Security Assurance Plans are adhered to by all relevant stakeholders throughout project duration. Define IP address strategy for the entire control system. Perform hardening in the substation environment and maintain documentation in line with engineering policies. Map requirements across different cybersecurity standards and evaluate solutions. Build functional infrastructure (networking, virtualization, server OS configuration) from the ground up. Monitor vulnerability publications and patch management processes. Test, FAT witness, and support installation and commissioning of the control system LAN network.
Required Qualifications
Qualification in Communication Engineering or related field. Strong knowledge of IEC 62443 (parts 4‑1, 4‑2, 3‑3, 2‑4). Experience with secure remote access architectures (VPN, PKI). Proficiency with virtualization platforms (VMware, Hyper‑V, Proxmox). Configuration expertise for Windows Server and next‑generation firewalls (Fortinet). Familiarity with intrusion detection systems (e.g., Nozomi, Radiflow). Knowledge of anti‑malware, patch management, and disaster recovery tools. Understanding of network monitoring and management. Knowledge of industrial protocols (IEC 61850, IEC 101/104, PTP, OPC UA, DNP3, Modbus TCP/IP) and debugging via Wireshark. Experience with Substation LAN design within IEC 61850 environments. Understanding of network security/hardening best practices. Excellent knowledge of protocols such as OSPF, VRRP, LACP, SNMP, SSH, SFTP. Advantageous: experience with GE Reason, Westermo, or Meinberg products.
