Non-operated Joint Ventures ('NOJVs') form a material and continuously evolving part of bp's portfolio, generating over two thirds of bp's free cash flow and providing bp with a presence in more than 60 countries. To achieve bp's vision to 'become a recognised industry leader in NOJV management', a NOJV Solutions team of subject matter experts has been created with the goal of providing help, support, guidance, and self-verification to bp's NOJV community. The NOJV Environmental, Carbon and Social (EC&SR) Senior Manager will be a member of the NOJV HSE&C team and the NOJV Solutions team reporting to the VP NOJV HSE&C and Enterprise Risk. The NOJV EC&SR Senior Manager is accountable for the development of a strategic a multi-year programme to deliver on bp's EC&SR ambitions and EC&SR risk exposure management as they relate to NOJVs.
About the opportunity:
We are now looking for a NOJV EC&SR Senior Manager, who will lead the EC&SR team responsible for developing and implementing a multi-year strategy to improve governance of, and collaboration with bp's 350+ NOJVs and a growing portfolio on carbon and sustainability. In this role, as the successful candidate, you will also support M&A and wider business development relating to NOJV opportunities. As the NOJV EC&SR Senior Manager, you will also design and embed a bp-wide framework for improving the carbon and sustainability competency of NOJV-facing staff including Directors, Asset Managers, Risk Process Owners and Business Developers.
The role requires deep and broad technical expertise in Carbon and Sustainability across a range of operating activities including oil, gas, solar, wind and transportation.
Extensive experience of working with and / or within Non-operated Joint Ventures is a preferable, as is an ability to influence up to EVP and SVP level and across wide partner groups.
Furthermore, the role requires external advocacy and engagement within Industry associations, NGO's representing bp on EC&SR activities relating to NOJV Management and influencing.
This is a material role looking to energize a community of 1000+ bp employees who work with NOJVs, so that they share, learn, and adopt NOJV carbon and sustainability best methodology for the long-term.
About the location:
The primary work location for this role is in the UK - Sunbury, however we welcome applications from other locations/countries, offering some flexibility with the role location in one of our bp offices.
About the role:
In more detail, as the successful candidate, some of your key accountabilities are:
- Environmental, Carbon and Social Responsibility ambitions: Support the co-ordination of bp's activity to deliver on the NOJV parts of its EC&SR Priorities and ambitions and wider Sustainable fit to influence NOJVs on Net Zero and Methane, Human Rights/Labour Rights Modern Slavery, biodiversity and protected and a wider sustainable fit.
- NOJV Influencing: Serve as the NOJV Solutions 'one stop shop' and the first point of contacts to provide: SME support such as planning and deliver of EC&SR seminars and outreach to NOJV operators; direct support to bp directors and shareholder teams; NOJV risk assessment and 'first line' self-verification of NOJV EC&SR activity.
- Industry collaborations: work with NOJV partners, industry bodies (e.g. Oil & Gas Methane Partnership (OGMP) NGOs (e.g. Environmental Defence Fund or UN Environmental Programme) to influence the environmental and sustainability performance of bp's NOJVs.
- Net Zero: Accountability to deliver bp's OGMP obligations to influence all in scope NOJVs to develop an OGMP implementation plan aligning with OGMP framework to deliver higher level of Methane reporting and monitoring.
- Industry engagements and advocacy: Accountable for bp's NOJV EC&SR, bp's NOJV Advocacy engagement with OGMP and EDF and other trade organisations and NGO's and the delivery and execution of joint activities set between bp and EDF as defined by the bp/EDF MOU.
- NOJV EC&SR Performance data: accountable for the collection and verification of all bp NOJV EC&SR data collection such as GHG reporting for bp's Annual reports and Sustainability Report and develop EC&SR insights in support of business portfolio reviews.
- NOJV EC&SR Systems and Processes: accountable for the development and coordination of implementation of the NOJV EC&SR systems, EC&SR risk and self-verification approach to guides and tools for the full life cycle of Business development, Project, operational phase and Decommissioning.
- Support NOJV EC&SR M&A and BD activity and lead on development of best methodologies, guides and tools relating to EC&SR including EC&SR contract provisions, EC&SR partnership Assessment for sustainable fit assessment.
- Track and assure progress of NOJVs against EC&SR ambitions and aims carbon reduction and sustainability incl. labour rights, modern day slavery and biodiversity
- Business Impact / Key Performance Indicators: deliver and maximise value for bp from NOJVs by influencing material improvements in EC&SR performance within NOJVs. Measure, track and influence carbon and sustainability metrics for NOJVs. Work to protect bp from exposure to NOJV EC&SR incidents, maintaining consistent, applied focus on the most material NOJV exposures to bp. Support Business Development teams to develop new NOJVs aligned to bp's Sustainability Aims.
- Supervision: line manage small team of direct reports to deliver the programme of work. Additionally, lead and energize a virtual team of NOJV asset managers, bp NOJV Directors, risk process owners, and carbon & sustainability SMEs to drive continuous improvement and consistent and systematic delivery.
You will have a degree (ideally MSC level) in a Carbon or Sustainability related subject area, Engineering or Science.
It would be essential that you have:
- Extensive relevant experience in a Carbon or Sustainability role demonstrating personal and process safety leadership skills with highly advanced knowledge of Carbon & Sustainability and regulatory systems, standards, and policy in the energy industry.
- Knowledge of working with Non-operated Joint Ventures, either in an NOJV-facing team or as a secondee into an NOJV.
- Considerable community and partner management experience, building ways of working, frameworks or management systems, and energizing others to deliver through them.
- Exposure to senior leadership roles in bp e.g. through a Business Advisor role or participation in governance meetings like Carbon Tables or Sustainability Tables.
- Strong people skills, influencing skills and emotional intelligence.
