Principal Data Engineer - Platform and AI
New Yesterday
About PleoAt Pleo, we’re on a mission to revolutionise the way businesses manage company spending. No more outdated processes, clunky spreadsheets, or frustrating delays - we believe spend management should be seamless, empowering, and surprisingly effective for finance teams and employees alike. We’re creating tools that promote autonomy, foster trust, and let businesses focus on what truly matters.
About InvolvementOur culture is built on transparency, collaboration, and a deep commitment to innovation – which is reflected in our spending solution. At Pleo, you’ll join a passionate team shaping the future of work, all while having some fun along the way.
About The RoleYou'll join the Data team to drive innovation and deliver impactful solutions that power our business. As a Principal Data Engineer, you'll move beyond incremental improvements to lead foundational projects. You will provide hands‑on leadership to shape the future of Pleo's data architecture. Embedded in the Data Platform Group, you’ll work directly with the VP of Data, contributing as a key member of the data leadership team. You'll collaborate extensively with Product, Engineering, and Business teams to ensure our data solutions directly drive product innovation and business outcomes. You’ll help shape the future of Pleo’s data landscape, support multiple teams, drive strategic projects, and stay hands‑on with cutting‑edge technology to deliver impactful solutions.
What You’ll Be Doing
Partner with product and business teams to develop data strategies that enable new features and improve user experience
Drive key strategic projects across the organisation, dipping in and out as needed to provide leadership and hands‑on support
Support multiple teams across Pleo in delivering impactful data and analytics solutions
Build data products that directly support Pleo's product roadmap and business goals
Collaborate with the VP of Data and other data leaders to set the vision for Pleo’s data strategy and ensure alignment with company objectives
Enhance our data infrastructure and pipelines to improve scalability, performance, and data quality
Experiment with and implement innovative technologies to keep Pleo’s data stack at the forefront of the industry
Mentor engineers, analysts, and data scientists to foster growth and build a world‑class data team
Examples of projects you may lead include:
Data catalog and data literacy: spearhead a new data catalog to empower the entire organization with accessible, high‑quality data
Data platform & warehousing strategy: lead the revamp of our data infrastructure and our dbt architecture to scale for the future
AI engineering strategy: support our Product & Engineering teams in structuring and building new AI platform tools for internal & external usage
Community of Practice: foster and grow our internal data community, establishing best practices and mentoring technical peers across the company
Tech StackWe work with both AWS and GCP as well as Kubernetes for our hybrid infrastructure. We use Python and SQL alongside Airflow for orchestration and Kafka for event‑driven processing. Our data warehouse is currently in BigQuery, and we serve dbt and Looker.
What You BringWe're looking for a strategic thinker who can translate complex business challenges into scalable data solutions. You will thrive if you have:
High proficiency in Python with a proven track record of delivering high‑quality data pipelines and products at scale
Experience designing, building, maintaining, and scaling data platforms in both the AWS and GCP ecosystems
Experience building data products for analytics purposes, with a focus on AI/ML applications
Expertise in designing systems and data architecture serving platform, product, and analytics purposes
The ability to inspire and act as a trusted mentor who builds strong partnerships
The ability to innovate with pragmatism, actively contributing to a culture of continuous learning by seeking and sharing knowledge
Why It’s a Good FitThis role is for you if:
You are a passionate technologist who loves balancing high‑level strategy with hands‑on execution. You enjoy coding and still spend time debugging, managing or supervising complex data pipelines
You are excited about advancements in AI and data engineering best practices
You want to own and shape Pleo’s data architecture (not just one piece of it), and help deliver it
You excel at mentoring and empowering other data professionals, helping them grow their careers
You have significant experience working in data platform teams with a proven track record in implementing and fostering DataOps practices
What It May Not BeThis role may not be for you if:
You want to focus on architecture and strategy only. This is part of the role, but not all of it - we expect you to be hands‑on too when needed
You prefer working on a single project for a long time rather than dipping in and out of various strategic initiatives
You lack experience in building complex data pipelines or designing data models at an organisational level
You are eager to focus on big data ecosystems (we don’t operate with very large volumes of data)
Your experience is focused around consulting projects instead of long‑term platforms

United Kingdom: £136,595 - £142,120
Spain / Portugal: €156,000 - €172,000

Last time we hired a Principal Data Engineer, we received a total of 452 applications but only 19 were selected for an intro call. Some of the key reasons why previous candidates didn’t make it past the application screening stage include:
CV writing and content: many CVs were generic and AI generated. We expect real impact and a clear picture of achievements
Application care: every application is reviewed by a human. We expect a similar level of attention paired with a human‑care approach
Profile to role fit: we expect a principal‑level engineer with organisation‑wide or cross‑division initiatives experience and the ability to touch code for years
Why Join Us?
Working at Pleo means you’re working on something very exciting: the future of work. Our mission is to help every company go beyond the books. Pleo itself means ‘more than you’d expect’, and it’s been the secret to our success over the last 8 years. So it’s only fitting that we’d pass this philosophy onto our customers to help them make the most of their finances.
We think company spending should be delegated to all employees and teams, that it should be as automated as possible, and that it should drive a culture of responsible spending. Our values tell the story of how we work at Pleo. We have four core values: ‘champion the customer’, ‘succeed as a team’, ‘make it happen’ and ‘build to scale’. They guide our culture and help us deliver results.
We’re a 850+ team from over 100 nations, with offices in Copenhagen, London, Stockholm, Berlin, Madrid, Montreal, Lisbon, and many remote positions worldwide. We support a good work‑life balance and help you set up the best remote setup possible.
