Combat Systems Engineer – External Communications

Location: Frimley, Portsmouth, Broad Oak or Weymouth. Hybrid and flexible working arrangements available. Salary: Negotiable based on experience.

Responsibilities

  • Capture and agree technical requirements according to company and programme processes.
  • Review technical solutions against contractual requirements and regulations for compliance.
  • Create, capture, configure and control design documentation as per company processes.
  • Generate design change requirements and manage associated documentation.
  • Contribute to Verification Cross‑Reference Index (VCRI), Integration, Test, Evaluation and Acceptance Plans (ITEAP) and Qualification Plans.
  • Interpret User Needs, CONOPS and CONUSE to derive technical and functional requirements for external communications systems.
  • Ensure design proving evidence is comprehensive, captured in IBM DOORS and endorsed by appropriate authority.
  • Define and support acceptance criteria and events for design, build, integration, installation and commissioning using the LCM process and CADMID.
  • Flow‑down requirements to suppliers and oversee acceptance of their deliverables.
  • Provide specialist technical support to shipbuilder installation, integration and commissioning activities.
  • Support integrated performance and acceptance activities, including acceptance of equipment from suppliers through to system acceptance by the customer.

Qualifications

  • Essential:
    • Knowledge of external (over‑the‑air) communications systems in the maritime defence domain, and a comprehensive understanding of how such systems interact with the overall platform (radio frequency spectrum, data/voice communications, systems network architecture).
    • Platform and sea experience in an operational, build, trials or in‑service support environment.
    • Awareness of Product Safety and SHE.
    • Strong communication skills and ability to engage with stakeholders.
  • Desirable:
    • Knowledge of the complete engineering lifecycle and experience across multiple phases.
