Overview

Principal/Senior Naval Architect within the Vehicle Control team, working on submarine manoeuvring modelling and related hydrodynamics as part of one of the largest and fastest growing Naval Architecture Departments in the UK. You will collaborate with naval architecture, systems, Active Vehicle Control, propulsion engineering teams, customers and suppliers to deliver innovative and safe submarine solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct analysis and evaluation of submarine platforms manoeuvring performance from concept design to in-service support.
  • Undertake development, verification and validation of mathematical manoeuvring models using physical model test data.
  • Generate Safe Manoeuvring Envelopes and support associated operator guidance.
  • Collaborate with enterprise partners to develop modelling capability, processes and toolsets for major programmes.
  • Work with naval architecture teams, systems teams, Active Vehicle Control system teams and propulsion engineers, as well as customers and suppliers, to deliver safe submarine solutions.
  • Support and conduct hydrodynamic sea trials such as depth and heading control, including test form development and post-trial data analysis. Experience in generating ship or submarine manoeuvring modelling is desirable.

Qualifications

  • Advanced numeracy and analytical skills.
  • A strong understanding of hydrodynamic principles and methods.
  • Degree in Naval Architecture, Aeronautical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics or equivalent experience.

Desirable

  • Hydrodynamic/aerodynamic design and evaluation experience.
  • Physical testing experience.
  • Chartered Engineer or working towards/ability to achieve.
