Principal Research & Data Scientist (Medical Devices)

Amber Therapeutics is looking for a Principal Research & Data Scientist to join our dynamic team. This is a full‑time hybrid role based at our new custom‑built facility in Harwell, Oxfordshire. We specialise in the development of cutting‑edge active implantable medical devices.

The Role

Lead and shape Amber Therapeutics’ data science strategy, driving the effective use of large‑scale neural, physiological and clinical datasets to advance adaptive neuromodulation therapies. Build robust data infrastructure, develop analytical pipelines and apply advanced statistical and computational methods to extract meaningful insights that guide therapy design, clinical research and product innovation. Influence strategy and lead the development of revolutionary data science capabilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and execution of Amber’s data science strategy.
  • Oversee the design and optimisation of data infrastructure, pipelines and databases.
  • Apply advanced analytical, statistical and machine learning methods to generate actionable insights.
  • Develop and validate computational models to deepen understanding of neural dynamics and therapeutic mechanisms.
  • Collaborate cross‑functionally to integrate data‑driven approaches into clinical studies and product development.
  • Ensure data quality, governance and reproducibility across all data activities.
  • Support the creation of embedded algorithms and analytical tools for real‑time and offline data interpretation.
  • Identify and protect novel intellectual property arising from data science and signal processing and neuromodulation research.
  • Mentor and develop scientists and engineers in data analysis, modelling and research best practices.
  • Publish scientific findings, contribute to grant applications and represent Amber at leading research forums.

Skills & Experience

  • Ph.D. or equivalent experience in Biomedical Engineering, Data Science, Computational Neuroscience or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience building and managing data infrastructure and analytical workflows for large and complex biomedical datasets.
  • Strong expertise in statistical modelling, signal processing and applied computational methods.
  • Experience working with clinical and preclinical data, ideally within neuromodulation, neuro‑engineering or physiological systems.
  • Proficiency in Python, MATLAB and modern data platforms (SQL, cloud‑based data lakes, scikit‑learn, TensorFlow, PyTorch).
  • Understanding of medical device development, data compliance and regulatory standards.
  • Evidence of contribution to IP, scientific publications or translational research outputs.
  • Familiarity with neural interface technologies, implantable systems and data acquisition tools.
  • Experience in high‑performance computing, data engineering or cloud‑based analytics (AWS, Azure, Databricks).
  • Experience leading cross‑disciplinary research projects.
