Principal Safety Engineer

Location: London (Hybrid)

Clearance Required: Must be eligible for UK Security Clearance and must be a sole British .

Copello are supporting a leading defence organisation in the recruitment of a Principal Safety Engineer. This is an exciting opportunity to join a forward-thinking engineering team working at the forefront of defence technology, delivering safety-critical systems that support complex platforms and mission-essential operations.

In this role, you'll be a core member of the safety team, responsible for driving key safety engineering activities throughout the product lifecycle — from early-stage design through to operational support. This is a rare opportunity to influence the safety of high-integrity systems supporting real-world operations in demanding environments.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead and support system safety assessments across software and hardware domains
• Perform and review safety analyses, including HAZOP, FTA, FMEA/FMECA, and LOPA
• Work collaboratively across engineering teams to embed safety into every stage of development
• Support certification and assurance processes in line with defence and industry safety standards

What You’ll Bring:

• Strong background in functional or systems safety engineering
• Experience working on high-integrity, safety-critical systems
• Familiarity with MoD, maritime, or aerospace standards (desirable)
• Analytical mindset with a detail-oriented approach to problem-solving
