Job Description
The Environment Agency is fully committed to having an inclusive workforce that reflects the communities we serve. We don't just talk about diversity; we seek it, embrace it, and live it, for the benefit of our staff, our communities, and our environment.
It’s an exciting time to be involved in planning England’s water resources. Our water supply is under increasing pressure due to drought and dry weather, with the driest start to a year since 1976. We have recently published our National Framework for Water Resources to secure our future water supply. In this role, you will be crucial to its success.
First released in March 2020, the framework innovated in planning for more resilient water resources to climate change, droughts, and population growth, along with enhancing the environment. The 2025 framework expands on these achievements, emphasizing integrated, multi-sector planning at all levels.
The post holder will support activities to deliver and implement the National Framework, working closely with team members and external stakeholders to progress water resources topics.
The team
You will join the Water Resources Resilience team, leading the National Framework and collaborating across sectors to improve resilience.
We are part of the Environment and Business (E&B) Directorate, which influences policy and legislation, facilitates delivery, and builds trust to secure resources for environmental initiatives.
Experience/skills Required
We are interested in candidates with:
- Good communication skills
- A commitment to building strong relationships with colleagues and partners
- Experience in project and programme support
- Good organizational skills, including planning, tracking, delivering, and evaluating work
- Experience in environmental planning and legislation is desirable but not essential
As we are a dispersed team, you must be able to work independently while maintaining effective communication.
Development opportunities and training will be provided.
Contact and additional information
This role is fixed-term until 31 March 2026.
You will have an inclusive incident management objective in your development plan. Appropriate training will be provided.
The role is based in an EA Office location, with flexible/hybrid working arrangements. Some travel and overnight stays may be required.
Please read the Candidate / Additional Information Pack. For queries, contact WRNationalFramework@environment-agency.gov.uk.
Applications are assessed blindly via competency questions. Interviews will be held via MS Teams within two weeks of the closing date.
Length of contract: up to 31/03/2026
Competencies:
- Achieves Results: Provide an example of challenging objectives you have met, how you ensured success, encountered problems, and learned from the experience.
- Communicates Effectively: Describe a time you communicated with many stakeholders, the methods used, ensuring understanding, and the outcome.
- Takes Decisions and Solves Problems: Share an experience of making an important decision quickly, factors considered, problems faced, and results.
Note: The Environment Agency is not part of HM Civil Service; therefore, you will not be a Crown Servant or eligible for continuous service. For those in local government or similar, you may be eligible for continuous service for redundancy calculations. Contact your HR for clarification.
We value diversity and inclusion and welcome flexible working, including job sharing. We guarantee interviews for disabled applicants meeting minimum criteria.
The Environment Agency uses government frameworks for recruitment and does not engage directly via post, email, or phone. For becoming a support supplier, visit the Crown Commercial Service website.
