Ready to play your part?
At AWE, it's not just a job, it's far more than that. Our shared purpose is to help keep the nation safe. Could this role be the opportunity for you to play your part?
AWE is recruiting for a Trainee Health Physicist for the Radiation Protection and Dosimetry Group.
The Radiation Protection and Dosimetry Group are part of the Science function at AWE. We provide legal and technical advice to a range of internal and external customers regarding health and safety in relation to working with radioactive materials and other sources of ionising radiation.
No other organisation in the UK provides radiation protection and dosimetry advice across the same range of applications and customers. Our work covers nuclear manufacturing facilities, forensic laboratories, new build facilities, decommissioning projects and national security operations, each presenting unique challenges.
Who we are looking for
We are looking to recruit Trainee Health Physicists to join our team. A career in radiation protection suits candidates who wish to apply practical, scientific and technical knowledge in a multi-disciplinary environment with both office-based and practical elements, where clear communication with people from diverse backgrounds is essential. Every day is different.
The successful candidate will have either operational experience in health physics, dosimetry, environment, radioactive waste management, health and safety (ESH) or related fields, or hold a degree in a science, technology or engineering discipline and be ready to apply their experience, knowledge and qualifications to learning how to become a radiation protection professional.
Our two-year health physicist training scheme is industry-leading, combining training modules that cover the full range of knowledge required with placements around the business to develop world-class professionals. After completion, staff are encouraged to pursue professional accreditation as a Radiation Protection Adviser and chartered status with the Radiation Protection Council.
You will need the ability to work calmly and constructively in a priority-changing environment, manage your own workload, and demonstrate initiative, enthusiasm, flexibility, and the ability to meet tight deadlines.
