Internal Redeployment Only - Technology Transfer Officer (Biomedical & Life Sciences)
The purpose of the post of Technology Transfer Officer (Biomedical & Life Sciences) is to provide technology transfer support for the College of Biomedical and Life Sciences primarily in the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Biosciences, Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences, Healthcare Sciences and Optometry & Vision Sciences. The post will support the technology transfer activities of schools that already are major generators of external research income to the University. The post will also develop the significant potential that exists to generate income from the commercial exploitation of intellectual property rights though the creation of spinout companies and licensing. The post is based in the Research Commercialisation team in the Research Service (RSERV) and the post-holder will work closely with other staff with responsibility for the identification, evaluation and exploitation of commercial opportunities arising from the University's research portfolio.
This post is full time and open-ended.
This role is eligible to be offered on a blended working basis, meaning that as well as spending time working on campus you can also choose to spend some time working from another location, e.g. your home. Salary: £40,497 - £45,413 per annum (Grade 6)

Job Description
Key Duties
Your primary responsibility will be to support the University's academic schools to demonstrate the utility and impact of intellectual property generated from their research. This will be achieved, primarily, through the identification, evaluation and protection of intellectual property and its commercialisation through licensing and the establishment of spin-out companies. Additional responsibility includes liaising with key strategic partners (e.g. SETsquared, Catapult Network, Cardiff & Vale University Health Board). This will involve:
- Reviewing commercial opportunities arising from research projects and assisting the board of University College Cardiff Consultants Limited (UC3), in the evaluation of such intellectual property.
- Managing an existing portfolio of technology transfer projects in order to increase income to the University from licensing, assignment, spin-out company activities from research and development work associated with the commercialisation of University intellectual property rights and managing the operations of the team that services the College of Biomedical and Life Sciences, delegating work, monitoring progress and intervening as required.
- Building and establishing high-level networks and relationships with key contacts of translational and/or proof of concept funds (including the University's harmonised UKRI Impact Accelerator Accounts and Research Wales Infrastructure Funding) in order to prepare applications for such funding.
- Proactively interact between the University, external investors and key strategic partners (e.g. SETsquared, InnovateUK, Development Bank of Wales) in order to deliver the objectives and targets of the venture.
- Assisting in the preparation of sound business cases for potential spin-out operations in order to secure internal approvals and secure funding for these activities, presenting proposals to external funders and investors where appropriate.
- Take up, where appropriate, non-executive director positions on University spin-out companies and assist such companies in delivering their business plans and key objectives and to report to the University and the board of UC3 Ltd,
- Provide professional advice, guidance and support to staff involved in spin-out projects to formulate robust plans to exploit business opportunities.
- Develop, devise, manage and deliver training and stimulate technology transfer and impact activities within the University holding seminars, workshops and courses.
- Play an active role in supporting best practice for the management and translation of intellectual property at Cardiff University towards impact.
- To contribute to the continuing improvement of the Department's services and quality systems.
- Ensure that an understanding of the importance of confidentiality is applied when undertaking all duties.

Essential Criteria
- A first degree in bioscience or a related discipline (e.g. biochemistry)
- Post graduate research and development experience in an academic or business environment or evidence of experience in a research administration role.
- Broad knowledge of i) biomedical science research and technology and ii) of the major sponsors of research and
- Ability to liaise with a wide range of individuals and businesses in the biomedical sector and a high level of flexibility and willingness to work in a team.
- Ability to demonstrate a sound knowledge of intellectual property rights.
- Experience of the commercial application of science, knowledge exchange activities and the Impact Agenda.
- Ability to communicate conceptually detailed and complex information effectively and professionally with a wide range of people.
- Excellent communication skills and proven ability to develop networks in order to contribute to long term developments.
- Evidence of ability to solve expansive problems using initiative and creativity; identify and propose both practical and innovative solutions.
- Experience of organizing and prioritizing a demanding workload and proven interpersonal communication skills.
- Experience of working in a Higher Education environment
