Overview

We are looking for a Director of SHE Operations to provide strategic leadership and governance across the Safety, Health & Environmental operations at SGN. Reporting to the Chief Safety Officer, you will be critical to driving forward safety standards, high performance and pushing a Zero Harm ethos in operations across SGN. You will be leading across the SHE Transmission, SHE Distribution Environment and Property areas to ensure alignment, assurance and continual improvement. As a key bridge between operational SHE delivery and strategic safety leadership, your focus will be on ensuring regulatory compliance, operational excellence and a prioritised culture of safety and care.

Responsibilities

  • Lead SHE operations across Transmission, Distribution and Contract Partners providing a consistent, high-performance approach to safety, risk control and environmental protection in line with SGN’s Zero Harm initiative.
  • Provide expert leadership on SHE policy, governance and regulatory compliance, ensuring SGN meets legal compliance, is audit ready and follows best practice.
  • Support the CSO in executive and regulatory reporting, governance forums and play a critical role in crisis response.
  • Mentor and develop a robust senior SHE team, ensuring a high performing and collaborative leadership team.
  • Maintain positive relationships with regulators (HSE) and other industry bodies to protect SGN and influence best practice.

Qualifications

  • At least 15 years experience in Health and Safety, with significant senior leadership experience in highly regulated and high-risk industries.
  • NEBOSH Diploma (or equivalent) and Chartered membership of IOSH (CMIOSH).
  • Proven ability to lead multiple SHE functions, delivering service excellence through high-performing teams.
  • Excellent knowledge of UK safety and environmental legislation and regulatory frameworks.
  • Demonstrate success in driving culture change and continuous improvement in safety and environmental performance.
  • Excellent high-level problem solving skills, navigating non-routine and complex issues, devising solutions through analysis, experience and knowledge.

Regular travel will be required as part of this role, including to our Head Office in Farringdon, London.
