We are flexible on location, this role can be based from our Manchester, Nottingham or Birmingham office.

Our Tax & Share Incentives team is recognised in Chambers and Legal 500, and currently comprises a team of nine, including two Partners. The team is based in our Birmingham and Nottingham offices, although it works with and provides support to other teams in all of our offices across the country (but doesn’t currently provide Irish tax advice to our Dublin office). The Tax team acts for a broad range of clients across the private, public and third sectors, with clients ranging from individuals to multi‑national corporates and large public sector bodies.

What does the role actually involve?

  • Corporate tax, including tax legal support on share and asset sales and purchases
  • Employee share incentives, and employment tax, including legal drafting and technical advice
  • Advice on real estate tax issues, including SDLT (technical advice and compliance) and VAT
  • Providing support and advice on various other tax issues as they arise, including stamp duty
  • Providing advice on time and to a high standard of technical competence
  • Running with your own files, with support from senior team members as required
  • Assisting the more senior members of the team with more complex transactions and advice
  • Delivering exceptional client service
  • Undertaking any other duties as required, commensurate with the level of the post

What technical skills are required for someone to be successful and enjoy the role?

  • Excellent legal drafting and research/analysis skills: able to provide clear, concise, and commercially relevant solutions, explaining or advising succinctly on difficult and complex areas
  • Keeping up to date with legal issues and developments (both HMRC guidance and legislation)
  • Desirable: experience of drafting and negotiating tax covenants and warranties on share sales and purchases, and dealing with stamp duty on share purchases
  • Desirable: experience of drafting and advising on employee share incentives (including EMI)
  • Desirable: knowledge and experience of advising on SDLT on freehold and leasehold transactions
  • Knowledge and experience of advising on VAT in relation to property transactions, and knowledge of general principles of VAT, CGT and corporation tax preferred, but training and support will be provided as required
  • Good IT skills, at ease with electronic time recording and case management systems
