We're looking for a thoughtful, tech-savvy legal professional to join our growing legal team as Senior Counsel, Privacy & AI. In this pivotal role, you’ll provide trusted guidance at the intersection of privacy, AI regulation, and product innovation—helping BetterUp scale responsibly across global markets.
This is a highly cross-functional, high-impact role, ideal for someone who thrives in fast-paced environments, loves tackling complex legal and ethical challenges, and brings a practical mindset to compliance. You’ll partner with teams across the business to embed privacy and AI governance into our products, operations, and culture.
What you’ll do:
Advise on global privacy and AI compliance matters, with a strong focus on UK and EU laws (e.g., UK GDPR, EU GDPR, DSA, AI Act)
Collaborate with Product, Engineering, HR, Security, and other teams to apply regulatory requirements to real-world practices and emerging technologies
Draft, negotiate, and advise on a variety of vendor, customer, and technology contracts
Lead the execution of Data Subject Access Requests (DSARs), privacy impact assessments (PIAs), and other rights-based compliance activities
Develop and maintain internal privacy governance frameworks, policies, records of processing (ROPA), and other compliance documentation
Monitor evolving global regulations related to data, privacy, and AI—and translate them into clear, practical internal guidance
Partner with cross-functional teams to create and deliver privacy education, policies, and tools to foster a culture of responsible innovation
Manage internal privacy and AI governance tools and automated systems
Serve as a key contributor to BetterUp’s broader data governance and risk management efforts
What we’re looking for:
Qualified in the UK with 6+ years PQE, ideally with significant in-house legal experience in a technology or SaaS environment
Deep expertise in UK and EU privacy and AI frameworks (including the GDPR and EU AI Act), and working knowledge of global privacy laws and AI governance trends
Proven ability to interpret complex regulations and apply them in practical, business-focused ways
Experience building or enhancing privacy compliance programs in fast-moving startup environment
IAPP certifications (e.g., CIPP/E, CIPM) are strongly preferred
Strong communication and relationship-building skills—able to influence, educate, and align stakeholders across functions
Intellectual curiosity, humility, and a collaborative mindset
A pragmatic, hands-on approach with a passion for ethical innovation
