About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Design Engineer with extensive experience in highway design, particularly in the preparation and delivery of Section 278 and Section 38 schemes. The successful candidate will play a key role in the design, coordination, and delivery of infrastructure projects for both public and private sector clients. Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D is essential.

You will work within a multi-disciplinary design team, supporting the design and delivery of highways and drainage schemes associated with new developments, highway improvements, and urban regeneration projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the design and delivery of Section 278 and Section 38 highway works in accordance with local authority and DMRB standards.
  • Prepare and review technical drawings, design models, and reports using AutoCAD Civil 3D and related software.
  • Undertake geometric highway design, including horizontal and vertical alignments, junction layouts, and roundabouts.
  • Produce drainage designs in accordance with national standards and sustainable drainage principles.
  • Liaise with clients, local authorities, and other stakeholders to ensure projects are delivered to specification, on time, and within budget.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and technicians.
  • Contribute to project management, fee proposals, and design programme planning.
  • Ensure designs comply with health, safety, and environmental requirements.

Key Skills and Experience

Essential:

  • Degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Proven experience delivering Section 278 and Section 38 highway design projects.
  • Advanced working knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D for highway and drainage design.
  • Strong understanding of DMRB, Manual for Streets, and local authority standards.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work to tight deadlines.

Desirable:

  • Chartered or Incorporated Engineer (CEng / IEng) status, or working towards it.
  • Experience using drainage design software (e.g., MicroDrainage, Causeway Flow).
  • Familiarity with 3D modelling, BIM workflows, and digital design processes.
  • Experience working within a consultancy environment.
