The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is the UK’s principal competition and consumer protection authority that drives market outcomes that benefit people, businesses and the UK economy. Our work is high profile, continually evolving and intellectually stimulating with a regular presence in national media and of interest around the world. We are facing far-reaching changes in our external operating environment and equally material changes to our own responsibilities and functions. Alongside our existing competition law enforcement, mergers and markets regime powers, the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act gives us significant new powers to enforce consumer protection law and to promote competition in digital markets.
In this landscape, our Competition Enforcement function remains at the core of our work as an agency: tackling illegal conduct that raise prices and reduces consumer choice and tilts the playing field against fair-dealing businesses. Whether through detecting secret cartels or reining in abuses of market power, our cases send a strong message to those who are tempted to stray over the line and serve to promote competitive and dynamic markets. We also have an important and growing role to play in supporting businesses to develop good practice.
