Senior Ecologist
New Today
HCUK Group is looking to recruit a Senior Ecologist, ideally based in the south-east of the UK, to join our small team and grow our ecological consultancy within a well-established multi-disciplinary environmental practice.
This role involves project management and fieldwork to serve clients navigating the planning and development process. It suits someone wanting to work from home, with experience managing ecology projects through subcontractors and conducting fieldwork such as UK Habitat Classification, protected species surveys, bat assessments, and producing reports like Preliminary Ecological Appraisals, Ecological Impact Assessments, and BNG assessments.
We offer a varied portfolio of projects, including heritage work related to historic buildings, and opportunities across sectors like residential, commercial, and renewables. Working within a reputable consultancy, there is scope to develop your portfolio in a supportive environment.
The role is fully home-based, with site visits and meetings as needed. Projects are nationwide, primarily in London, the home counties, and the Midlands, with a preference for candidates in these regions. Quarterly meetings and social events are held in London.
We seek a candidate eager to develop their career at HCUK.
The Role:
- Project management of ecological assessments, habitat surveys, and impact assessments, coordinating with ecological consultancies and directly involved teams.
- Conduct and oversee field surveys, including protected species and bat surveys.
- Produce high-quality, concise reports following CIEEM guidelines, including PEA, EcIA, mitigation strategies, and BNG assessments.
- Ensure project compliance with relevant legislation and planning policies.
- Build and maintain relationships with ecology subcontractors to deliver projects.
- Engage with clients to provide ecological advice and foster relationships.
- Participate in tendering, business development, and marketing activities.
Qualifications include a degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, or related field, and full CIEEM membership. A Level 2 Licensed Bat Ecologist is preferred, or Level 1 with commitment to progress. Proficiency in ecological surveying, data analysis, report writing, and knowledge of UK wildlife legislation are essential. At least 3 years of experience in a consultancy setting is required.
Desirable skills include being an Accredited Agent or Ecologist on bat EPS licences, a network of regional ecology contacts, expertise in botany, GIS skills, and a master's or PhD.
Ideal candidates are highly organized, proactive, able to work independently and in teams, and manage workloads effectively.
