We are looking for an experienced investigator to join our National Investigations Team as a Senior Environmental Crime Officer. The role involves leading investigations into serious environmental crime, coordinating and driving investigations, and ensuring effective case progression from lines of enquiry and intelligence review to evidence gathering, case file preparation and prosecution. This position sits within the National Environmental Crime Unit, part of the National Regulation and Monitoring Team. The National Investigations Team is a nationally dispersed group of investigators focused on bringing the most serious environmental offenders to justice.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate investigations into serious environmental crimes alongside Senior Investigation Managers and the Major Incident Room.
  • Identify lines of enquiry, review intelligence, raise and allocate actions, coordinate evidence gathering and interviews, and prepare case files for prosecution.
  • Work on complex investigations often involving Organised Crime Groups, illegal waste exports and large-scale fraud.
  • Contribute to developing the team and the investigative process, working with Partnership Organisations where applicable.

Experience and qualifications

  • High level of attention to detail; hard-working, self-motivated with a strong investigative background.
  • In-depth knowledge of investigative legislation (such as PACE and CPIA); excellent verbal and written skills; basic IT competency (Microsoft Word, Excel, Teams).
  • Knowledge of environmental crime, leading on serious criminal investigations, and workings of a Major Incident Room desirable.
  • Experience in building and developing investigation teams; ability to drive and find solutions using initiative.
  • Successful completion of SC and NPPV2 Vetting processes is required within a 6-month probationary period.
  • Full driving licence is required.

Working arrangements and additional information

  • This is a hybrid role with flexible working from home and an Environment Agency office; travel to meetings and operational duties is required.
  • Responding to incidents is a central part of the role; be available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support. Additional payment and full training/workplace adjustments are provided for the incident role.
